Sept 14th – Oct 6th, 2013 Opening reception Saturday, September 14th from 7 – 10 pm   HARBOR gallery is pleased to announce Collide, featuring artists Sam Adams, Jacob Bagwell, Alyssa Gorelick, Ellen Letcher, Trish Tillman and Amanda Wong. Works will be on view Saturday, September 14th through Sunday, October 6th, 2013, with an opening reception Saturday, September 14th from 7 – 9pm. "They take apart their nightmares and they leave them by the door Let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair" - Tom Waits, Tango 'Til They're Sore  Collide explores the alchemical combination of disparate objects and images that are purposefully combined. The six artists in this exhibit each reconstruct and redefine everyday materials in ways that can be described as dark, mystical, humorous or playful. The unique processes and materials used by each individual artist, although very different, resonate with each other and create an unexpected melody from dissonance. The works range from meaningful collections arranged with care to detritus manipulated into assemblages and sculptures.  Sam Adams, a painter, produces collages as a counterpoint to his painting. Adams' small, pristine works on paper bring together abstracted images from 1950's National Geographic magazines in unexpected ways. Jacob Bagwell begins his work with imagery from vintage gay porn. These near-abstractions confound the objectification of porn, obfuscating it into something to be gazed at infinitely. Alyssa Gorelick's roots as a photographer are revealed in her non-traditional use of photographic paper. She combines images with found objects reprocessed almost beyond recognition allowing associations to develop between them. Her use of materials that are often crafty walks a delicate line between the formal and the hand-made. Ellen Letcher creates collages influenced by mainstream media, Catholicism and her experience as a printmaker. Using paint as an adhesive, she assembles images and objects that are seemingly discordant to create connections over time. Trish Tillman makes talismanic objects from recognizable elements of household life; knick-knacks, furniture, and decoration all take on ambiguous new lives as they are thrown into existence together. Amanda Wong is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses on the idea of nature as the ultimate state of otherness. Her site specific installation made from locally found materials will bring Bushwick physically into the gallery.  Sam Adams received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2009. He has exhibited paintings widely in the US and abroad; however, this will be the second time his collages are on view. His collages have been featured in "The Age of Collage: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art," published by Gestalten in 2013. His paintings have been exhibited recently at Ballast Projects, NY; Parallel Art Space, Ridgewood, NY; and Art Platform, Los Angeles, among others. He lives and works in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  Trish Tillman received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation 2009 MFA Grant. Most recently she has exhibited work with Slag Gallery, NY; Present Company, NY; CUE Art Foundation, NY; Civilian Art Projects, DC; and is a Professor of Art and Design at Monmouth University. She lives and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY.

La Bienal 2013, El Museo’s 7th biennial exhibition, features work by 37 emerging Latino and Latin American artists, from newly-minted to mid-career, who live and work in New York City metropolitan area. This installation of La Bienal is curated by El Museo Curator Rocío Aranda-Alvarado and Raúl Zamudio, an independent New York-based curator.

This year, La Bienal features Brazil as the special guest country. Our biennial guest country presents an opportunity for El Museo to remain in conversation with similar urban artistic landscapes throughout Latin American and the Caribbean, and expose our audiences to emerging artists in other locales.

The artists and works in the La Bienal are as diverse in their backgrounds as they are in their creative processes. From Chilean artist Julia San Martin, whose experimental expressionistic work reflects on the violence and persecution experienced by civilians living under a dictatorship, to Puerto Rican artist and Bronx native Manny Vega’s exploration and celebration of collective memory and the shared histories of the African diaspora in the Americas. Likewise, the methods and processes of the artists range from recycling materials to producing traditional objects, as is the case in Sean Paul Gallegos’s exploration of ethnography and sneakers, to Cuban artist Pavel Acosta’s exploration of art and scarcity through Wallscape,” an intervention into El Museo’s gallery walls using stolen paint. La Bienal 2013 showcases paintings, drawings, video, sculptures, installations, and performances.

Since its first edition in 1999, La Bienal – formerly known as The (S) Files – has been a significant means for creating ties between institutions and artists, while building networks and opportunities for a wide variety of talented Latino artists. La Bienal alumni include Firelei Baez, Allora & Calzadilla, Margarita Cabrera, Alejandro Cesarco, Richard Garett, Pablo Helguera, Tamara Kostianovsky, Carlos Motta, and Iván Navarro.

The exhibition was designed to provide a platform for artists who may not be represented in larger artistic institutions, and who have never shown at El Museo. Through this survey, La Bienal hopes to bring visibility to their work and their creative process. La Bienal is interested in the conditions under which works of art are made and how they are received by the public. The artists’ methods and processes are of significance, as is the context in which they are created and interpreted. El Museo’s Bienal celebrates the experimental and experiential aspects of contemporary art, and supports the notion that this production is part of the history of contemporary American art. In conjunction with La Bienal 2013, El Museo is launching RADIANCE: After Hours at El Museo, lively evenings of music, gallery talks, special performances and programs, to be held every Wednesday from 6pm-9pm between June 19, 2013 and August 28, 2013.

STACY SCIBELLI :: VOWELS

Proof Gallery is pleased to present Vowels, a new body of work by artist Stacy Scibelli opening Saturday, April 27th. Vowels is comprised of works that straddle sculpture and fashion - familiar forms transformed, distilled dissected. These objects are still suggestive of use, making the viewer complicit in an absurd thought experiment. In other cases there are elegant revelations about the art of the pattern-making and the subtle magic of the tailor.

Scibelli’s background in fashion and costuming inform her project which aims to elicit a participatory response in her audience - past projects have included wardrobes of garments intended for open-ended interaction and adornment. Vowels takes a more distanced and literally measured approach - the bones are laid bare - an accumulation of often simple gestures hint the structure of this language.

Stacy Scibelli is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including shows at The Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY, the Godine Family Gallery in Boston and The Torrance Art Museum in Los Angeles. She is the recipient of the Boston Center for the Arts Studio Residency, a Mass MOCA Assets for Artists grant and a Quimby Colony Textile Arts Residency.
