Shiri Morderchay (MFA '07) shows at "The Fantastic Painting Show"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Rebecca Haskins Bettina Sellmann and Shiri Mordechay The Fantastic Painting Show May 2 - May 31, 2013 Opening reception May 2, 2013, 6:00-9:00 PM 547 W 27th St, Ground Floor, New York Open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Rebecca Haskins, Bettina Sellmann, and Shiri Mordechay are pleased to present The Fantastic Painting Show. Independently produced, and held in a former nightclub space in Manhattan’s Chelsea Gallery District, the exhibition will feature new and recent paintings by the young female artists who respectively hail from the United States, Germany, and Israel. The works on view are united in a fanciful sensibility; threads of a pervasive sense of the fantastic, imaginative nostalgia, and an eye to pre-modern art history weave between them. The relatively small-scale acrylic paintings of Rebecca Haskins contrast patterns reminiscent of traditional European, Persian, and South Asian patterning against superimposed images of iconic antiquities and classic designed objects. Moments of the artist’s personal feelings of intimacy towards the objects are interspersed with bursts of abstraction. The combination is dreamlike, at times bordering on psychedelia. Shiri Mordechay will present a large-scale, irregularly shaped scroll painting displaying a surreal narrative where grotesque imaginative beings and spritely characters interact against a vast landscape. Overlaid with smaller paintings and mixed-media sculptural elements, the work will encompass an entire wall of the exhibition space.
