Are you ready for the new swathes of MGIT/MCIT fics that will come out because of Veilguard?
I would like to say yes, but I'll be lucky if I can get my hands on a game system capable of playing Veilguard myself before that wave...

Does anyone know what explanations are given for how modern characters wind up in Thedas? I know their appearance is commonly attributed to the Breach, but that doesn’t usually get explained either beyond “wizard did it” type handwaves. Looking for the more unique or well thought out explanations to help me get the inspiration flowing.
Magical artifacts or reincarnation are often used as explanations for transdimensional travel into Thedas in addition to the Breach Rifts... And at least one where the ability to travel between worlds was an inherent ability of a character. I also seem to recall one where it was the result of a magical ritual performed by resident Dragon Age characters...
But I’m sure someone else has given this idea detailed thought--if they wouldn’t mind sharing them here...?
A few MGIT stories have addressed the possibility of a language barrier. Considering the analogies to historical Earth, I wonder if Feredelens would speak something like Old English or Middle English? So that there's a little bit there that's almost recognizable, but not enough to fully communicate...
Ooh, that’s an interesting thought! And a good way to explore the language barrier in a different way.
The anon asking for stories that don’t have Solas/Cullen/Alistair as the romance option is such a mood, I wish more people would write Isabela or Merrill as the love interest (or even Leliana) 😂
More variety of pairings is always nice.
do you think it’s to late to write a mcit prompt that you reblogged in the year 2016? 😂
Absolutely not too late. What is time?
Do you like fics where the MCIT is a mage or do you prefer them to not be a mage? I'm up in the air about it rn and I need a tie breaker
I’d say I’m neutral, as it really depends on the execution. When the MCIT’s approach to magic is filled with nuance, I’m all about it. However, in some ways, it can be even more satisfying when a MCIT builds up their strength and dexterity to match Thedosians...
All that being said, in terms of actual gameplay, I almost always go mage.
i dont know if this is anywhere yet, but i live on a very small and leaky boat, which means sometimes i have no electricity, have to compost my toilet, no running water, etc. every time the modern -in-thedas stories go on about the culture shock of none of those things i'm just like >:3c because thats what life is like sometimes when i cant hook up to shore power/water. ADVANTAGES. i would tell them im a pirate.
I think the frustration you’re feeling is common for a variety of circumstances, not just culture shock. I can’t tell you how annoyed I always got in college with the stereotype of, “We’re here in the English program because we can’t do math! Lol,” when I’ve always enjoyed both...
It all comes down to perspective and familiarity. A lot of people have never experienced life without the amenities you listed above and would find it jarring to be without them, just as a lot of literature-focused people do struggle with math and would feel ill-equipped if faced with basic arithmetic.
The best way to broaden these so called “common” perspectives is to share your own! Show that these aren’t universal experiences and that there are contradictory perspectives out there.
I, for one, am always seeking resourceful characters who have skills they earned prior to entering Thedas and find ways to use them to overcome situations they might be less familiar with (while sometimes struggling with situations that other people would find easier to deal with!).
It would be cool to see a character with experiences like yours. Someone experienced in nautical living and all of the limitations and advantages therein!
(It’s also pretty hilarious to imagine a MCIT who just kind of fucks off into the ocean, rather than deal with any plot-based nonsense)
What are your favorite mcit fics? Or which ones accurately depicts characters.
One of my favorites is the Traveler series by sarcasmandcynicism. The protagonist is...so interesting. Ending up in Thedas isn’t even the most exciting thing to happen in her life. She has a backstory and motivations beyond the scope of Thedas and she’s skilled.
Another one I’ve always loved is Tales of Inquisitor Bob by lazbobthing, but that one is on indefinite hiatus, unfortunately. This was the first story I read that approached the MCIT trope with a more chaotic protagonist. It was a breath of fresh air after some of the dark realism stories I had been reading at the time, I think.
