Could you recommend any good books for young adults suffering from depression and anxiety?
Have you heard of goodreads? It’s a wonderful website to keep track of all the books you’ve read, and want to read. It also has a feature called listopia. Listopia is where anyone can make a list of books for anything. There are tons for “depression,” “borderline personality disorder,” “anxiety,” etc. Just search anything and click on the listopia link.
I found one that I think you’ll like called “YA Books about Depression, Self Harm and Suicide” and is filled with a few books I’ve read and loved such as Speak and 13 Reasons Why. Speak is written by my all-time favorite author Laurie Halse Anderson.
Some of the books on that list can be triggering so please make sure you can handle the book’s subject matter before you start in on any of the books. Books such as 13 Reasons Why, which discusses a teenager who kills themselves and life afterwards for those around that person.
I absolutely love discussing books. I have a booktube account on youtube - that’s how much I like talking books. So feel free to ask me for recommendations at any time!!!
Hello! I got permission to add some of my favorite teen books involving mental illness here, so be prepared for a good sized list. Some may be triggering:
The Luckiet Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron
The Best Little Girl in the World (and the sequel Kessa) by Steven Levenkron
Cut by Patricia McCormick
Because I am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas
Speechless by Hannah Harrington
Identical by Ellen Hopkins
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
This is How I find Her by Sara Polsky
All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
I Was Here by Gayle Forman
Girl Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Like Mads, I love talking books. In fact, if I wasn’t a Psych major, I probably would be an English Lit major!
I also just really wanted to recommend Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig! It’s a non-fiction book about the author’s struggle with depression and anxiety, but is also incredibly inspirational and relatable, and I honestly think anyone struggling with mental illnesses should read! It’s a really easy read and includes lists and things, so it’s something you can always come back to if you need a bit a motivation!
I hope you’re doing okay!
Take care and lots of love,
