1) “Oh my god this shit is going to be GOOD. REALLY GOOD. Now I want to see you bullshiting your way out of this one Midoriya, your boyfriend just got excited to know you two have so much in common, how are you going to break his heart?”-Man, I can’t wait to see how Todoroki reacts to Midoira busting out the other 5 quirks and leaving him behind in terms of duel-wielding powers. Also, this is confirmation that technically Todoroki’s quirk counts as a 2-in-1 deal for quirk powers, even if they’re both aspects of the same power.
2) “That was some cold shade you threw right there Todoroki, hot damn. Well, at least Midoriya is keeping it simple, he never saw it happening before, didn’t even knew it could happen, and technically he told the truth by saying it was derived from his original quirk. Technically.”-It makes sense that Todoroki would be a little miffed at Midoira, considering his whole character development and subsequent arcs dealing with his more positive outlook now look like they were founded on a lie, given Midoira appears to have not been taking his own advice the whole time they were fighting (which incidentally makes Todoroki the third of his rivals to be irked by Midoria apparently hiding this power until the most recent fight) but Midoria honestly doesn’t have to lie much when explaining how he doesn’t know much about how it activated or that he even had that power in the first place. If this keeps up, his classmates won’t be fazed by him pulling new powers out of nowhere in subsequent battles, like firing dragon-shaped energy constructs in a kamahameha blast.
In fact, the more interesting conversations are going to be how he finds ways to explain each subsequent new power to his classmates as being derived from his quirk, even with the opportunity to update his quirk classification, there’s going to be major adjustments every time he unlocks a new ability, and the more varied they are, the more difficult it’s going to be to explain them away. This might actually become a major problem for izuku, as while it’ll help cut down the comparisons between him and All Might, more people might begin drawing comparisons between him and AFO instead, especially since Izuku aims to become a number 1 hero, and thus a major public figure, having multiple powers available is going to be a massive problem for him to find a way to adequately explain it all away. That said, I am really looking forward to the next 2 sports festivals, since Midoira already got a reputation as a crazed lunatic from his first appearance, widespread enough that even Gentle knew who he was with little reference, showing his new powers and abilities at the next festivals will serve as a major PR boost for him, since Criminals will know he’s got multiple abilities that each put him on a level higher than them if they see him on sight.
3) “Oh no, I know exactly what will happen…”- Like medicine, sometimes what’s best for you is a very bitter pill to swallow, but the fact is that Todoroki needs to have more control over his fire half if he wants to make the most of it, and, just like he learned a lot about being a top hero from his father during the internship, there’s no-one better to learn his fire control techniques from. At least Endeavour is undergoing massive character development of his own at the same time, so subsequent training could be a good way for him to showcase his development through taking a kinder, more supportive role than he did previously when he was blinded by surpassing All Might.
4) “Endeavor, please, can you put the criminal away before you start texting your kid? Oh my god that poor bastard, wasn’t even given the privilege of a normal arrest.”-It looks more like endeavour responded the instant he heard Shoto’s text, even mid-arrest. Granted, it does show his skills and his strength to be able to handle taking down a criminal one-handed whilst also checking his recent messages- wish I could do that with some of my work- but it also seems to be another mark in the ‘aggressive fatherhood’ running gag.
5) “Alright, I got the idea. We haven’t seen that person as a hero, and Present mic just made a comparison with Shinso, so it definitely was someone whose quirk wasn’t enough to get them into the hero business, or at least wasn’t given the right opportunity to grow and show their worth. Like Shinso, they got the short end of the stick, and Aizawa doesn’t want it happen again.
Present mic definitely stays in touch with them, going by the way he’s talking, but Aizawa probably had a falling out. Crap, that’s sad.”- Yeah, to clarify, because I don’t know if somebody pointed it out, but shirakumo is the guy you can see chatting to mic in the brief flashback in 216, and he’s somebody that Aizawa and Mic were close with during their own school years. He hasn’t shown up in the present yet, but as a minor spoiler/incentive to read the spinoff, he does show up in a minor cameo role in vigilantes, since that’s a prequel to this main story, so it’ll let you get an idea of what his personality is like before Horikoshi finds a way to let Aizawa reconnect with his old school pal during another one of Class 1A’s plot-mandated shenanigans
6) “OUR LORD IS ABOUT TO SHINE UPON US AGAIN
NO MORE FULL MOONS”-You say you’re dealing with your persona craze, but you keep finding ways to make these shout-outs to the franchise, and Persona 3 in this case
7) “But I appreciate that Midoriya is officially the emotional support. He was invited just because Aizawa likes his presence. What, you thought he was Eri’s emotional support? Hell no, Aizawa can’t stand having to deal with both Mirio and Monoma at the same time.”- Aizawa spent all that Time giving Dad support and Advice for Shinso, not to mention running 1A’s class activities, he’s barely had time to spend Dad hours with Eri. Therefore, her main emotional support right now comes from Midoria and Miro, the two people who put their lives on the line and managed to touch her heart at the culture festival. Not to say that Eri doesn’t like Aizawa or anything, it’s just she feels more safer and such around Miro and Midoira, preferably together, so Aizawa’s main role around Eri is to provide a level of comfort that she can’t accidentally erase anybody with her powers whilst he’s around, while she slowly warms up to him. I guess that makes Mira and Midoira akin to those support dogs who provide emotional stability for anxious kids outside the house, which reminds me…
8) “Goddammit… Well, Eri’s power was in a whole new level, it makes sense that Monoma’s unable to copy the activating mechanism that makes it work. Probably for the best, it would be a problem if it went berserk like it did with Eri.”- more like he’s unable to overcome the inherent limitation that his own quirk’s timed function and ability to retain power only for a several minutes directly contradicts the restrictions imposed upon certain quirks that need to accumulate resources over a lengthy period to be effective. That said, it’s unclear what resource Eri is building up inside herself to gain enough power to unleash the healing wave, or even how she accumulates it in the first place, so if Monoma can help them understand that, maybe Eri could start learning how to accumulate energy faster, or start to control the amount she emits, or even focus the amount she emits in a single direction instead of an AOE, so it’s safer to use her power around others without fear of accidently catching someone who doesn’t need healing in the crossfire.
9) “Why you ask Midoriya? He could save mirio in the blink of an eye, and fix your arms.”-Granted, Eri herself is still able to use the whole build-up of energy anyway, so that’s always an option once she starts to master her power focusing, but it’s unclear if it would work well for either of them. Midoira kinda needs his body built up to a certain level to be able to handle the Full Cowling levels he currently can, so undoing that to put his arms back to a pre-broken state might be detrimental to him in the short-long term, especially with the recent reveal of the MLA and their own nefarious plans in the next arc, as well as the league and what they’re up to. Midoria’s caught up in ever-escalating events, so it might be that he simply won’t have a peaceful enough time to risk resetting his control of OFA and then train his body back up again before shit majorly hits the fan. As for Miro, the issue with him is that his body is ‘already’ reset- his quirk factor was hit with the reset function of Eri’s power, targeted only to that particular body function and no other, so resetting him back a few months may not undo the resetting of his quirk.
It’s kinda like his quirk was reset out of existence, so there may be nothing for Eri to put back the way it was before. Additionally, Eri’s power only works in ‘reverse’ so using that on his quirk factor may not do anything at this junction except push the development of his quirk back even more. Overhaul did say that Eri’s power was to Rewind the ‘time’ of another, not that it de-ages them or resets things to a prior state, but that it literally turns the clock on their body backwards until they’re at a previous healthy state, so if Eri was to fix his powers, she’d need to work out how to unlock a ‘forward’ function to her quirk, allowing her to age people and, if she can target it, his quirk factor so it’s reset back to his current age. I mean, she only has the one asymmetrical horn on her head, so I’m kinda expecting her to grow another one to match, and that horn to contain the power to forward another’s time.
10) “They store power, and that can’t be copied.”- It’s a similar restriction to the one that prevented AFO from Stealing Best Jeanist’s quirk- some powers require time and investment to be able to be used properly, and whilst AFO may have the time and patience to spend practicing these abilities, to others that lack that patience or have limited time to use the abilities, it’s much harder to use these powers if you’re not willing or able to spend a lot of time learning how to use them from scratch. It’s actually quite similar to Midoria’s current problem with his new powers as well, come to think of it.
11) “Nice for you to realize now that Monoma could’ve fucking died back then Midoriya. A day later and it finally dawned to you.”-Well, he did kinda realise it at the time, given his panicked reaction to Monoma threatening to use his power, but the complete lack of exploded limbs and the pressing need to chase after Shinso at the time prevented him from really processing it, so he kinda assumed Monoma was bluffing at the time, or didn’t give it much thought until it got brought back up again.
12) “Emotional support, please help Eri as well, I think that Aizawa can deal with the two loudmouths for a few minutes.”- well, even the loudmouth coked off his head can tell there’s a time and an place for Tact, which isn’t always Aizawa’s strong suit- maybe half the reason he needed help with Emotional support for Eri is that he’s a bit too dry and forthright for his own good, even around a kid he’s trying to be gentle and caring towards.
13) “Oh that’s a fucking ominous call back right there. Yeah they definitely are playing that angle now, Midoriya is trying to deny that he is in any way similar to AfO, and this interaction with Eri, saying how the power isn’t evil, it just needs to be handled properly… Oh boy…
We’re in the endgame now, at least about this theory. I feel like we’ll know it soon enough…”- Yeah, it’s inevitable at this point that Midoria will start comparing himself to AFO when even characters like Bakugou and All Might, who know he’s the furthest thing from being like him, start drawing parallels between them. The real test is probably going to come when they final have an actual face-to-potato meeting, since here’s some murky connection between them that AFO seems to think is a funny joke, and he’s the only guy old enough to remember the punchline…
That said, no matter what happens between them this Power of OFA is something good for Midoria, it’s been formed willingly through people supporting and giving towards each other, and now their hopes are being given form through Midoira developing multiple abilities to rival AFO’s, at least in theory. It’s a matchup of Quality vs Quantity, only this time Midora’s got more moves in his arsenal that All Might did, and he’s got the brains to use all these new abilities simultaneously in similar ways to AFO himself during Kamino. Regardless of whatever the relationship between Midoria and AFO, Midora himself is somebody worthy of using these abilities given freely by the will of the past holders, as opposed to AFO forcibly stealing the powers against his victim’s will. That said, considering Midoria always wished for just the one power to make his dream of becoming a hero true, it seems like a massive case of ‘be careful for what you wish for’. @thelreads

1) “Oh boy, should’ve expected that one… Alright, Bakugo now wants to know why he haven’t shown that power to him yadda yadda the usual stuff, just calm down and he’ll tell you that he just downloaded that DLC.”- that’s the problem with ‘die or fly’ powers- you can never remember clearly exactly ‘how’ you activated the power in the first place, and the most effective way to train to find the ‘switch’ to use it again involves putting you in mortal peril. Which, the be fair, is right up UA and Bakugou’s alley, but it goes make training with his new abilities extremely nerve-wracking, even discounting the fact he’ll have to go through this about 5 more times.
2) “Oh wait, All Might is here, spitting blood again, oh lord it was some time since we last saw that. “-One thing I’ve appreciated in both the anime and the Manga is the subtler hints that All Might’s condition is slowly, but gradually improving, compared to how he used to be under the constant strain of upholding the title of ‘symbol of peace’. Compared to the stick-thin proportions at the beginning and constant blood-vomiting he used to do all the time, Thin Might actually looks like he’s got slightly more meat on his bones, and he’s not vomiting blood as often. If you compared the hero Lifestyle to constantly training and running a marathon then All Might is like a peak athlete that’s just retired due to his body no longer being able to take the strain of the challenge anymore, and now he’s no longer under constant-self-damage his body is able to recover, slightly. It’s not like he can regrow his organs or get back up to peak health, but he’s not quite at death’s door when he was pushing himself all the time previously.
3) “So, they are just trying to get that power to activate again, got it. Yeah, if only Bakugo was there I was ready to believe he was going to murder Midoriya, but since All Might is also present…:- Bakugou’s already resolved most of his previous murder feeling towards Deku, and now he just genuinely wants him to improve as a hero, if only so he can get the satisfaction of ‘earning’ the title of number 1 hero fair and square from a worthy competitor. In that regard, he’s not even pissed that Deku’s suddenly developed new powers out the wazoo, since his goal was always to surpass All Might, and this latest development just means that Deku’s destined to eventually become even Stronger that All Might ever was, and more versatile to boot as well- All Might 2: All Mightier. Why would he be pissed when his challenges just ramped up in difficulty? If anything, he’s hacked off that Deku isn’t mastering these powers quicker to he can have a real challenge in their next rematch.
4) “Ohhh…. Now that seems a bit strange… You mean that you can’t feel the power, or you can’t feel the force ghost that was the source of the power? The power went dormant again or that connection with beyond the pearly gates isn’t strong enough yet? Those are some really different situations, but it still means we just got a taste of what is to come…”- It’s a little hard to tell, but it seems that the ‘visualisation’ thing Deku does to activate OFA: Full Cowling isn’t fully synched up to his new quirks yet. Unlike the original quirk, it’s probably harder for Deku to ‘feel’ Black Whip separate from the power boost he gets from OFA itself, and now he’s out from the training area, enough time has passed that he can’t quite grasp the feeling of Black Whip on its own. He can kinda remember how it’s supposed to go, but it’s fuzzy and indistinct, since he couldn’t practice fresh off the heels of activating the power mid-battle, so he’s struggling to get the knack of it, and then figure out how to attribute a ‘switch’ to it, similar to how he can now use full Cowling almost naturally. That said, thinking about it, Deku still hasn’t gotten around to using Full Cowling subconsciously- he still has to ‘activate’ the quirk to gain the power, and whilst it might be easier to regulate within his 0-20% limit right now, he’s still not using his as freely as Tokoyami uses Dark Shadow, for example.
Deku’s managed to pass the metaphorical driving test for Full Cowling, and is now in the stage where he’s easing into learning how to drive so well that he barely even considers what he’s doing when he’s driving- it’s all automatic- or at least it was for me afterwards, given how many times I had to play Taxi for friends and family. In addition to that, he’s now found he has access to 6 other types of automobiles, each with their own strengths and disadvantages, and now he’s got to do the whole thing all over again from scratch, plus keeping maintenance on the progress he’s already made with OFA so he can use more and more of its powers more freely. It’s one hell of a multi-tasking problem for Izuku, even forgetting the fact that he has regular school life and exams to worry about as well, so it makes sense that he’s struggling to learn an entirely different set of skills separate to the progress he’s already made. Guess it doesn’t help that the only tutors he has available on these new abilities can’t exactly schedule an appointment to pop in and out of his mind to give him free advice on how best to use them, at least until he’s mastered more of OFA.
5) “Bakugo got accepted into the Tea Room of Justice™, he must feel honored to be seen as an ally of good. Anyway, that aside, they are aware of the situation, that’s good, I would snap Midoriya’s arms in two if he for some reason decided to hide it from his father, he is the one that can help him the most, sans of course Gran Torino, that is currently unavailable.”- The Tea Room Of Justice is basically Izuku and All Might’s version of LeBlanc’s attic room, so at least they didn’t have to go through several shenanigans where their incredibly secret and serious discussions about their overarching goals, and the best way to achieve them for the moment, were held in public areas where they could be secretly recorded.
That said, I wonder how much Help All Might can actually provide to Izuku, given his almost complete non-exposure to the spiritual side of OFA prior, he’s practically on the same page as the kids here, or maybe even a chapter behind them, given he never realised the previous wielders would be able to add more than their strength to the quirk, even past their deaths. He’s not even certain of the exact sequence of previous wielders in the chain before his master, showing how he never really learnt more than the base origin of the quirk and how to handle it as a hero from her. That said, a problem shared is a problem halved, and it’s not like Midoria could plausibly find a way to hide it from All Might when he had a massive Multi-quirk rampage right in front of the entire school year, including him
6) “Oh fuck, that means that order they showed up there is the order he’ll get the power them. Oh fuck man this will be good.”- not exactly? Nana is the first wielder beside Deku in that Line-up, but he unlocked Hellboy Jack’s quirk first, who comes after her, and it’s unknown what exactly All Might could contribute to the quirk that he hasn’t already, given he’s quirkless as well, not to mention alive and present to given mentorship, rather than being on a random schedule that’s subject to the whims of the plot for his next mental appearance. Frankly, it’s a total monkey’s paw what Power Izuku will unlock next, when he’ll unlock them, and when he’ll meet the respective original holder of that owner- He was able to use Hellboy’s quirk before he met the guy in his head and got a few pointers on its particulars, but as he explained, that was because the power was primarily emotion-driven, meaning it’s easier to activate than the others, presumably, because Deku’s current state of yearning to ‘reach’ those in need/ those in need of a beating lines up perfectly with the quirk’s intended base function.
The other quirks presumably don’t have restrictions like ‘can only be used once in a Blue moon after you’ve sacrificed some unicorns to the gods of UA’, but presumably what triggers each of them is going to be difficult to identify in advance, at least if Deku doesn’t manage to increase his Synchronisation with OFA’s core more so the original Holders can actually tell him this stuff, but the main problem at the moment is the complete lack of Info about said previous holders. It makes sense from their perspective why OFA’s lineage has been kept top-secret, but that also means Deku and the others don’t actually have any warning yet on what powers he’ll pull next on the quirk roulette- Plus, given AFO’s history with the quirk and his own History being largely whitewashed from the public consciousness, it’s possible he may have had a hand in erasing the identities of those who dared stand up to him with this power, to complete the illusion that he was unstoppable, and made no mistakes.
7) “Oooooohhhhhh… Bakugo, did you perhaps just implied that maybe the king of evil was the one that somehow awakened this power? Well, he couldn’t have done that from his cell, he has a lot of guns pointed towards his potato face, buuuut… That theory that part of him is inside of OfA is still up…”- Yeah, they can chain his body down, but if he’s got a direct mental link straight into Midoira’s mind there’s no amount of weaponry in the world that can actually stop him from doing a little dream walking into Izuku. On the other hand, he does seem to have largely been unexpecting of Izuku’s presence when he started his revenge plot against All Might, as evidence by his surprise when he realised All Might must have already transferred OFA after the USJ attack, and he couldn’t seem to sense Isuku when he was nearby at Kamino ward, but still, the fact is that he’s the only other person Izuku’s new abilities compare to, and the fact that it’s technically a branched aspect of his own power means there has to be something going on between him and Izuku for him to start developing a good counterpart of his Power Parasite abilities.
The question remains, however, even if he did have something to do with OFA’s evolution- why? He’s already put all his efforts into raising Tomura to be somebody capable of becoming his successor, it doesn’t make sense for him to willingly power-up his student’s future nemesis, in case he becomes powerful enough to actually take Tomura out and stop AFO’s legacy plans. Even discounting the ‘adversity inspires growth’ viewpoint, AFO would basically be giving Midoria the Ability to become a hero 10 times more capable than the one that took him down in the end.
8) “Oh you definitely were into something there Bakugo, and once again, the fact that this power was created by AfO, and now the supposedly blood descendant of him is holding it again may have put some unknown cogs to spin inside of it.”- Frankly, this is why it’s super-important for Bakugou to join in on the regular OFA discussion with All Might and Izuku- because he gives no fucks and says what’s on his mind, regardless of how tactful it is, he actually breaches uncomfortable subjects with impunity and forces All Might and Izuku to confront harsh truths that nonetheless need to be discussed. All Might is a naturally secretive person because of his bad habits developed over time spent as the Number one Hero, and habitually keeps things close to the chest.
He outright said that he was aware that this new aspect to OFA was similar to AFO, but didn’t want to breach the subject, and Izuku has too much hero-worship of him/ is too timid to ask these things to bring them up. It took 59 chapters and 3 arcs before All Might filled Izuku in on the true history of OFA and the inevitable confirmation with AFO it would bring. Granted part of that was because he thought/hoped AFO was dead and that Izuku wouldn’t have to worry about it, but still, it took him a long time to fill him in on the essential History of his own inherited power. Bakugou being here means that the trio will probably make more strides in understanding OFA than they did before, and will help cut through All Might’s procrastination tendencies.
9) “Oh, that also explains why he can’t use it now. That talk with ghost baldman was the point where Midoriya subconsciously hit the breaks and took the key out of the ignition. He’s thinking about using it for short bursts, like he did against Shinso, but that also presents the problem of exactly how to do that, you can’t really pinpoint how to trick your subconscious that easily.”-Additionally, given how he finds it easier to activate Black whip when it’s merged with OFA, and thus powered-up from it, Izuku needs to feel out and identify how Black Whip’s base activation works on its own, so he can learn how to flip the switch to use it without OFA being active, and thus begin to master it from the ground up. It’s basically like him figuring out the right buttons to press in sequence on a keyboard to run certain computer programs on their own, or in tandem as needed, which will be quite a difficult process, so it makes sense of him to mentally shut everything about his new powers down so he can figure out how to turn them off and on first, then start slowly building up his activation of them to respectable levels.
10) “I’m… definitely getting some vibes that point towards the Dad for One theory… Like, seriously, they are paving the way for that to happenspolisten to my words before its too late”- The shading in this panel- half white light on Midoira’s face, half heavily darkened in shadow- is metaphorical of Izuku considering the darker half of OFA’s powers, how he’s now similar to the greatest source of evil he’s even seen, and wondering how his new powers make him different from AFO, given he’s achieved the exact same quirk from a different angle. It can’t be pleasant, knowing you’ve got so much in common with someone like him, and if the Dad for One theory is correct, that’s gonna weigh even more heavily on Izuku.
11) “So yeah, a point of divergence on their power is the way they can grown. Tetsu apparently can’t reach the same level of hardness as Kirishima, but is safe from environmental attacks like extreme heat and cold. Their power seem identical at first, but they are going in different directions.”- A lot of quirks can have similar ‘base’ structures, but differ in their execution of their powers and the effects they have on themselves and their targets. For example, Death Arms, the hero Izuku met in chapter on, has a strength-enhancing quirk, that’s so far been undefined, but I think I read somewhere that he gains super-strength from absorbing electricity, to fit with the ‘Frankenstein’ theme he has. This is technically the same ability as OFA, absorbing strength from an external source to power up the wielder, but they differ in that Arms can’t retain his power, and eventually burns out his charge using it, similar to Kaminari. Similarly, Momo can also produce metal from her skin to defend, but she can’t ‘wear’ it like TetsuTetsu can. A lot of quirks may have similar aspects and themes I common, but Horikoshi as so far been inventive enough that no two powers are ever exactly alike unless there’s a good reason for it, like blood relations.
12) “That seems nice, there’s too much to focus here, so of course let me talk about Mina using the Ludovico technique on Mineta. That was extremely fucked up in the book, but maybe its a necessary evil… Carry on Mina, stain your hands so other don’t need to…”-I have to wonder exactly what Mina is forcing Mineta to watch to cure him of his rampant perversions, assuming she’s not just showing him unpleasant images as punishment for his actions.
