The Man Who Secretly Wrote the Entire Premise of My Hero Academia
Most fans think the story of MHA starts with All Might vs All For One. They’re wrong. The actual fuse that lights the entire powder keg is a dead terrorist who killed himself in prison over a hundred years before chapter 1: Chikara Yotsubashi, a.k.a. Destro.
He is the single most important background character in the entire series. Without him, there is no Paranormal Liberation War, no Shigaraki as final boss, no League of Villains in its final form, and arguably no “villain boom” after All Might’s retirement.
1. What Destro Actually Did (Canon Facts)
Son of the woman who accidentally coined the word “Quirk”
Watched his mother get murdered for defending meta-human rights
Founded the original Meta Liberation Army to fight Quirk regulation laws
Fought the entire world’s governments for years
Lost, got imprisoned, wrote his manifesto (Meta Liberation War), then committed suicide
Secretly had a son → grandson → great-grandson Rikiya (Re-Destro)
That manifesto is the real One For All of villain ideology. It never stopped being reprinted.
2. Destro Is the Root Cause of 95 % of the Plot

Destro writes the book ↓ Surviving MLA members go underground and raise Rikiya as a cult prince ↓ Rikiya rebuilds the MLA into a 100,000+ member shadow empire and becomes Re-Destro ↓ Re-Destro bankrolls the League of Villains (money, tech, intelligence, facilities) ↓ Re-Destro loses to Shigaraki → hands over the entire MLA army on a silver platter ↓ League + MLA = Paranormal Liberation Front ↓ Paranormal Liberation War → Japan’s hero society collapses ↓ All Might retires → power vacuum → every single villain arc after Kamino explodes in scale
Remove Destro → no book → no modern MLA → no money for the League → Shigaraki stays a small-time gamer gremlin with 12 followers → All For One never gets a perfect vessel → society never falls.
Destro is literally the butterfly that caused the hurricane.
3. Ideology: The Most Dangerous Idea in MHA
Destro’s core belief: “The free use of Quirks is a basic human right. Society regulating Quirks is oppression.”
This sounds reasonable on paper. In practice it means:
Twice can make an infinite clone army
Toga can drink whoever she wants
Muscular can pulp anyone who looks at him funny
Dabi can burn down cities because “it’s his Quirk”
Destro’s “liberation” = no laws, no consequences, survival of the strongest. He is basically quirk-based anarcho-capitalism with guns.
And the scariest part? He’s half-right. The current system does discriminate against “villainous” Quirks (Toga, Shinso, Tokoyami, etc.). Destro just took the correct criticism and pushed it into genocidal territory.
4. Narrative Role: The Ghost in the Machine
Horikoshi uses Destro brilliantly as an unseen final boss of ideology.
All For One wants to rule the world
Shigaraki (early) just wants to destroy everything
Destro wanted to “free” everyone — and his idea is the one that actually keeps winning.
Even after death:
His book radicalized Hawks’ father
His book radicalized Curious
His book radicalized Geten, Trumpet, Skeptic
His descendant literally financed the apocalypse
All For One is the muscle. Destro is the philosophy that gave the muscle an army.
5. Power Level (Speculation)
We never see him fight, but the manga says he “rivaled All For One in influence and danger.” Given that Rikiya’s Stress Quirk is confirmed to be a direct evolution, Destro almost certainly had the same power — possibly even stronger because it was closer to the source generation. Prime Destro might have been a walking nuke when angry.
6. Why He’s a Better “Big Bad” Than All For One (Thematically)
All For One is a Saturday-morning cartoon villain: “I want to steal everything and rule forever.” Destro is a tragic, charismatic revolutionary who believed he was the good guy. His mother was murdered for loving him. He died in a cage still believing peace would only come when everyone was “free.”
He’s Magneto done right — a villain whose pain you understand and whose dream secretly tempts half the heroes (looking at you, Hawks and Lady Nagant).
Final Verdict
Chikara Yotsubashi is the single most successful villain in My Hero Academia.
He lost every battle. He died in disgrace. He never even met All Might or Deku. And yet, 120 years later, his idea completely destroyed the world All Might spent his life protecting.
All For One wanted to be the Demon Lord. Destro actually became the Devil — because the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, a tragic backstory, and a best-selling memoir.
He is the reason the story exists. He is the reason it ends in fire. And he did it all by killing himself before the manga even began.
That’s not just effective writing. That’s legendary villain crafting.
