what’s next?

the windy day has left a dusty haze lingering in the sky. Obstructing visibility for the two agents which could have been a big problem but considering they were in the agency grounds and within yelling range of the other agents, it’s not as big a deal. at least that’s what doyun wants to believe. there’s been so much going on that he doesn’t want to worry about what could happen. 

“why am i the only one forced to do this?” the teen complains as he curls up to his knees from his sit up position. his feet being held down by his ever cruel team leader. sure, maybe doyun caused a desk to slide down the stairs and break a crate of medical vials. but it’s not like he did it on purpose.

“shouldn’t this be like--” he huffs out as he lays back and then sits up again. the sweat on his brow becoming a little annoying but he refuses to pause because he just wants to be done. “--a team building chance or something?” 

maybe he should focus more and chatter less, but doyun has always been a chatter box. “how is this helpful to whats going on anyway?” and whining is his favorite thing to do.

Twilight Stroll

He’d managed to sneak out alright. Things seemed to be busier and more lively in the halls around just the beginning of the evening. He knew agents weren’t really supposed to go out after dark, but he was different, right? No one would fault him for being unused to rules, and most of them had been raised around here, where he was from the front lines. That made a difference, he felt. They wouldn’t deny him his natural habitat, right? Plus, people apparently didn’t like it when you smoked around them. He’d never really run into that out in the West Ward but he guessed it did smell a bit. 

He wasn’t too far out, he thought, just enough to stretch his legs (and try out actually new shoes!!). The street was quiet, and he mimicked its sound as he hopped on top of a dumpster, grabbed the gutter, and easily shimmied up to the roof. He looked out over the expanse of rooftops, his playground. He smiled. 

Taking off, he jumped. One, two, three roofs, and a quick flip that made him feel like he was flying. He bounced a little before coming around back towards MEIA, finishing out a U shape from his starting point. He let himself spin and fall onto the last roof, hands never leaving his pockets as he laughed in relief. Finally getting some energy out, he let himself catch his breath. Staring up at the burgeoning stars, he finally removed his hands and flicked his lighter, lining up for a quick smoke before anyone noticed he was gone.

to think that there once there existed a time  where looking back i did not find the shadow that is you. ( @miaxseb​​ )

the senior meeting comes to a close with a grey tinged air floating around everyone's head. the seriousness of the situation hits daesu hard. the knowledge that this required all hands on deck left a sour taste in his mouth as that can only mean the risk and danger is high. the odds of everyone coming back in piece or even alive were low. he’s never been a man of statistics but even he can tell the head agents seemed tense by the number and no matter how they run it there is no getting past the chance of losing someone. 

daesu finds himself thinking of his team. the junior twins who are so different in personality and yet so like and who he finds himself so proud of every time he witnesses their growth. he thinks of the baby on his team who seems to be holding onto a lot. who needs a guiding hand and he can’t help but wonder if he is even the right man for the job. 

his chest feels heavy as he pushes through the doorway to the weapon keep. his clearance allowing instant access and its been so long now that he doesn’t even pause before heading towards the supplies areas. already geared up in most of his mission uniform, all daesu needed now was armor and supplies. to do anything he can to prolong his own life and the life of those around him while out on the field. the title of leader rest upon his shoulders like a weight he never wanted--even though he has been a team leader for years now. 

the weight of leading fellow seniors into a dangerous district leaves him feeling sick. 

his body moves in a rhythm that shows years and years of practice and routine. a small black combat bag is taken from a locker with his team name labeled on it. a nod shared with alistair who passes by to continue setting up supplies everyone is going to need. he doesn’t waste any time on words as right now he isn’t sure his words would sound right. 

footsteps alert him of someone approaching--tense and ready even when still within the halls of the agency. his head raises just enough to catch a glance and he feels himself relax is only just a little. a sigh blowing past his lips and he shifts his position to be leaning a hip against the counter. “seb.” he greets, not quiet meeting the others eyes as the weight in his chest grows heavier. he thinks about the last time they went on a senior ranked mission. he thinks about how much it hurt to watch his closest friend go through that horrible incident. ( he thinks about his own team, still so young and so full of energy. he thinks about the cruelty of the world  to force them to grow up so fast ). 

“i still say you should have been named leader--or maybe agent lurker.” his tone has no heat to it like he had in the meeting room. contesting against his title even as jinx silences him with a few choice words. he wants to have faith in them to have faith in himself but he can’t help but wonder if they made a mistake. “i can’t even begin to figure out what to bring.” lies. he lies like he was trained for it and maybe he has been. aren't’ they all spies in the end. agents working behind the scenes to bring about a better future. or whatever bullshit propaganda they want to impart. daesu lies because he rather not face the truth of the present.

Agent Sebastian has been appointed team leader of RAVEN. 

ACTION REQUIRED ;  Please follow and welcome your fellow agent.  

A demon has you and your team cornered. Your medic is down and you’re running out of energy. You notice that there is a way to escape but it would mean leaving your team. What do you do? Be honest.

RESPONSE RECORDED BELOW.

his mind whirs, cycling through all of their mistakes, and all of the ways to move forward. mostly the latter, because in the middle of battle, there’s no room for distractions or letting your mind wander. you need to be present, and attentive, anticipating the next move, preparing for it every second.

but he can’t help but wonder what he did wrong, because this shouldn’t happen. it’s just one demon, and yet it won’t go down. their medic is incapacitated, and the demon looks no worse for wear. have they gotten more powerful? he’ll need to let jinx know about this immediately, and maybe report to maylin directly once this fight is done.

if they make it out. the situation looks grim; the more they fight, the more escape routes they lose, the demon slowly backing them into a corner. seb quickly takes note of the surroundings again, looking for anything to use to their advantage, and--

there’s a crack in the stone fence to their right, part of it destroyed. the kids will be able to make it through the gap. seb knows this. they can escape.

“hey. the tall fence to our right. did you notice that hole in it? go. i think only one of you can fit through at one time but you trained for moments like this. you can be fast. and once you’re through, run back toward meia. don’t wait for me. just go.”

they hesitate. one of them protests. “hey, this is one of the times you need to actually listen to me,” and it almost sounds like a joke. maybe it is. maybe something a little light-hearted in this heavy situation will let his team breathe a little easier-- make room for the inhale they need to sustain them through their escape.

“go. i will be fine. i used to do solo work all the time,” he reminds them. “i’ll distract the demon.”

he doesn’t know if it will work, but doubt doesn’t get anything done, and it certainly doesn’t help the others. he is their leader and he will stand strong.

finally, they listen, and once one of them makes a break for it, the others follow. the demon turns to pursue them.

“come on you ugly fuck,” seb shouts to distract it, shooting the demon in head. why isn’t this killing it? what is going on?

“don’t you know who i am?” seb taunts. “i’m the one you want. maylin loves me. losing me? that would be a big blow to meia and you know it.” does seb really believe that? not quite, but it might be easy enough to sway a demon. he’s sure he’s of some value to them, even if only because they all watched him grow up. they would mourn him, surely.

he doesn’t want to put them through that.

it’s enough to get the demon to focus on him instead, and he still has a little bit left in him. he needs to kill the demon eventually, but for now, he can get away with just stalling it and giving his team the chance to get far away from here. that’s most important.

it lunges at him, and he dodges successfully, but now his positioning is even less ideal. still, he shoots at it. surely enough shots will kill it eventually, right? maybe kaiser’s experiments found a way to build demons with skulls made out of titanium. wouldn’t that be something?

his gun clicks.

click. click. click.

“fuck,” he mutters. he’s out of ammo.  

he tosses the gun to the ground and unsheathes the knife attached to his belt just in time for the demon to charge again.

he should’ve told the kids he was proud of them.

do they know?

he hopes they know.

ever since he had awoken his enhanced strength, jiwon had been hesitant to work out as much as before. he reasons that he wouldn't want to end up destroying any of the machines or tools, or end up injuring his sparring partners, but perhaps part of him is afraid of becoming too inhuman. just being able to lift obscene amounts of weight, ranging from one-handing a whole couch, to deadlifting a small car—it all seemed uncomfortably close to being demon-like.

"but," he reasons, "i'm using it for good, no? for humanity?" perhaps that's just wishful thinking. he's sure he stopped being human years ago, but even so. despite everything, he's still ryu jiwon.

the door clicks shut behind him as he enters one of the training rooms, vision blurry as he lets out a yawn. it's too early in the morning for many others to be around, just how he likes it (even if his eyes burn from tiredness). he drops his bag to the ground before doing a couple of stretches in place, somehow completely missing the other person in the room altogether. perhaps he should be working on his situational awareness instead.

"god, what the—" he flinches when the humanoid figure in the corner of his eye moves. his mind quickly goes through all the possible scenarios and whether he'd pick fight or flight on all of them, before finally settling on 'that's just another damn person, you idiot'.

"seb," jiwon breathes a sigh of relief and mild annoyance. "why are you just...there?" he waves his hand half-heartedly. it's not like it's uncharacteristic of seb to be there—in fact, it's actually exactly where jiwon would look for him if prompted to. however, his run-ins with the senior agent had grown sparse since their time together in team raven, and a once-familiar face had grown stranger with the passage of time.

"what's up, dude," he throws up a hand in greeting. "haven't seen you around in a bit."

A message arrives to Senior Agent Sebastian’s and Senior Agent Epsilon’s coms devices. Maylin request them to arrive to a private room in the medic wing. When they arrived Celest is standing at the closed door. "I need you both to prepare yourselves. You're armed, correct?"

Seoyun nods, looking serious with his hand resting on his pistol to be ready at any moment. Seb is in a similar manner. He nods to Celest who nods in approval, opens the door, and steps aside. 

Lerissa and Maylin stand on either side of a medic bed. Handcuffed to the bed with enhancement dulling cuffs is a young person. The left side of their face has black lines running up to their white eyes. 

"Ah, good. you both made it." Maylin greets you, motioning for them to approach. "I have a task for you both but first I must stress that this is top secret. Do you understand?"

Seoyun is the first to respond, taking in the scene carefully. “understood.” 

Seb appears concerned as he takes in the situation but his loyalty is unquestionable as he replies. “Yes.” 

Lerissa waves Seoyun to her side. "Take a look at this, the markings say demon but the amount of demon poison in her blood is so little..." She seems perplexed. "I need someone else to verify this before I lose my mind." 

While this happens, Maylin turns to Seb. "this is senior agent Valkyrie of GHA. We recovered her at the edge of south gate. We have reason to believe she might have been part of what caused the GHA downfall."

Seoyun looks over the charts with Lerissa. The medics seem to be discussing things under their breath, leading to Seoyun giving a sample of his own blood. The results still end up the same. The girls blood shows like that of an enhanced but not a demon. Seoyun, perplexed and wary. “I have no explanation for this.

Seb observes in silence for a moment with a frown on his features. An unknown and potentially dangerous situation. “Has she lost all control or does she have some humanity left?” He questions, gaze falling on Maylin for orders. “What do you need me to do?” 

Lerissa taps at her holographic charts to flip them around and sighs. "So I wasn't seeing things. This is almost impossible." 

Maylin steps away from the bed to be closer to seb. "She attempted to leave once and we have since sedated her to not take the chance under the assumption she was a demon but the results." 

Both head agents tense a minute before the monitor's alarm goes off. Valkyrie tenses on the bed, attempting to yank her arms up being stopped by the cuffs. Demon miasma begins to form around her left hand and up her arm. 

"She's waking up! The serum has been burnt from her system--" Lerissa taps quickly at her screen. 

Maylin places a hand on her pistol at her hip.

Both of the senior agents are quick to draw their pistols. Aimed at the awakening potential demon on the bed. Lerissa is pulled back slightly by Seoyun and she takes the hint, shifting to be slightly behind the agent as she is not as battle prone (and also still in the stages of healing) as her medic. 

“Back up, don’t shoot! Let’s give her a chance.” Seoyun is for once the voice of reason. Proving to the head agents they made the right decision in promoting him again. 

“I hope you know if she tries to hurt anyone here I won’t hesitate to put her down.” Is seb’s response, gun trained on the demon and his stance steady. 

"give her a fucking chance, seb." Seoyun snaps but his voice is stressed, not mad. 

Celest steps closer. "This is why we called you both. A voice of reason and someone with no hesitation." 

Valkyrie stops moving at the voices, her eyes open slowly and takes on everyone in the room before landing on Maylin. A rough voice in need of water says "you're.. this is meia? you're maylin." 

Maylin nods. "Yes, you're in invicta city and meia hq." 

Valkyrie sits up slightly. "But-- GHA was burning, it was burning I need to go back!" She begins to fight the cuffs more, miasma darkening around her. 

Lerissa steps partly behind Seoyun, trusting him to watch her as she works to administer a calming serum. Seoyun has her pause in the serum, wanting to see if she can calm herself down first. “Agent Valkyrie, calm down.” He speaks to the girl for the first time. “You’re in no condition to help anyone, stay down.” 

Lerissa pauses, eyeing Seoyun before she lowers her monitors and waits to see. 

Valkyrie whips her head to look at Seoyun. She watches him and the Miasma begins to fade before she lumps back into the bed. Clearly exhausted. 

"I'm not a demon." Is the first thing she says. "So you guards can drop the guns."

"I'll drop the gun if you can explain the marks." Seoyun replies. 

“Agent Valkyrie, i've lost too many people for not being prepared to shoot, i hope you can forgive me for not dropping my gun yet." Seb tacks on.

Valkyrie takes one glance at Seb and seems to write him off. Her eyes locked onto Seoyun to see if he would really lower his weapon. Deciding to place even a small bit of trust in him. "I will if you lower the gun. I won't hurt anyone." She almost seems to be pleading with him to believe her. 

The head agents are silent as they watch the interaction but Maylin taps her wrist and then Seb's a small holographic message appears there. (Act as you see fit.)

"Sorry, but you were all miasma-ey for a minute there. I can't trust that yet. you've been cooperating and i appreciate that, but i need some answers before i put this down." Seoyun hasn't taken his eyes off of her once just in case. His eyes glance at Seb to make sure they are all on the same page."We won't shoot unless you give us a reason to."

Seb reads the message, nodding slightly to Maylin before voicing his agreement with is fellow agent. 

Valkyrie let's out an aggressive breath. The markings on her face seems to darken for a second before the fade to almost invisible. "It's my enhancement. GHA was... partnered with this scientist who wanted to make people stronger. Give the unenhanced a chance." 

Maylin whispers "Kaiser." under her breath. Celest steps closer to Lerissa. Lerissa takes in a shocked breath, hand shaking as she shifts completely behind Seoyun.

Everyone in the room is tense. Seoyun is the one to take the lead once again as he questions “Who was the scientist?”

Valkyrie seems scared but she swallows it back and meets Seoyun's eyes. Obviously a trained senior agent by how she handles the pressure. "He didn't give a name but he ..." 

Celest throws a photo of kaiser's profile, blacked out to only see his face, in front of the bed. Valkyrie leans back. 

"That's him. That's the scientist that betrayed us."

-    -    -    -   THE NEXT DAY 

“The tide is rising.” 

Maylin nods. She is seated at her desk, legs crossed and a portfolio resting on her lap. Across from her sits a tense agent. Dark braided hair pulled half up half down with wing clips holding them together in the back. Her eyes locked on the floor, hands folded in her lap. 

“You understand we can’t fully trust you yet, Senior Agent Valkyrie?” Maylin continues. 

The agent, Valkyrie, nods.

Maylin waits. When the agent shows no sign of speaking the head agent sighs and leans forward. “For this to work, I need you to be open with me.” 

“Forgive me, Head Agent Maylin, but I also don’t trust you.” Valkyrie raises her head, the black demon marks run up her neck to her left eye which is pure white. 

“That’s understandable. I’ll be as open with you as I can. If you can do the same.” 

Silence falls through the office. Neither wanting to give the room to one up the other. The door clicking open is what finally breaks through the silence. Celest slipped through and crossed to the desk. She sets a cup down in front of Valkyrie and then drops into the other chair in front of the desk.  

“So glad to see you both are hard at work conversing over important topics.” Celest snarks, her holographic desk popping into existence before her. Cameras of the agency appearing and showing various agents completing various tasks. 

“Valkyrie–”

“It’s Khiana.” 

“Excuse me?” 

“My name, it’s Khiana. I don’t want to be known by my GHA call name.” Kihana continues, her shoulders losing some of her tenseness for the first time since stepping into the office. 

Maylin and Celest trade a look. Celest seems impressed with the girl, nodding her head as Maylin smiles. 

“That’s a good start.” Maylin closes the folder she was reading and sets it on the desk. “Now, tell me everything you know about Kaiser and his part in GHA’s downfall.” 

“He showed up a year ago.” Khiana starts. Her next words make both head agents lean forward in surprise. “He... he came claiming he created the cure for demon poisoning.”

it’s been 24 hours since the kids were discharged.

the room feels so much bigger when its just him in here and, though he loves his team and cousins so much, the silence is almost comforting. the tenseness in his shoulders eases out as he leans back against his pillows. sitting half propped up in his bed with a book open in his lap but he isn’t reading it. his gaze is far away, lips pulled into a frown.

he can’t help the heavy feeling he feels in his head, in his heart. his hand raises to run along his neck and though he cant feel anything he knows the faint markings rest along his once clear skin. the proof of how close she came to losing control–losing himself. the medics were taking precautions because without lerissa being awake to heal him there is no guarantee the poison is fully gone. it touched his heart and daesu wonders how he managed to hold on as long as he did. even now he can feel that darkness creeping in the corners of his mind. flickering in the sides of his vision as if taunting him.

he hadn’t let himself ponder it, or the mission, while the kids were still in the room but now there is nothing holding him back from remembering. processing.

he hears the click of the door opening and his shoulders tense before he lets out a sigh, sinking a little further into his bed. a small smile pulls across his lips but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “ah, must be my lucky day if you're visiting me.” the shadows in his mind can be dealt with later.

the guilt comes back ten fold though as he looks at his closest friend. once again he has put seb through so much and daesu wonders how the younger agent continues to put up with him. but, he is oh so grateful.

“did you see the kids? they all booked it from the med wing so quickly, not that i can blame them.”
