the innocent past.

Cheng’s younger sister was great at making friends. When she was five or six, she found her first one by literally tackling down the little boy who had lived next door. She held onto the kid’s waist and demanded that they play together. The other agreed, though clearly a bit shy from all of this sudden attention. Since Cheng and his sister came in a package deal, that kid became his friend too. 

Those were simple days. Having fruits in the field, watching stars at night. Telling each other stories and thinking about a brighter future. 

One day, the neighbor disappeared, and of course took their little boy with them. Cheng’s sister was devastated and cried for actual days, lamenting her loss. While Cheng was also upset, as a teenager he had learned to manage his emotions better. Some relationships ended better without a goodbye, and one day, he was certain his sister would feel the same way. 

Little sister moved on when she found a new friend, and Cheng slowly forgot everything about (@miaxsilk) as well. He never thought they would see each other again, but alas, fate. 

Cheng wasn’t sure if it was really him, because it had been many years since those peaceful stargazing nights and memories blurred with age. Besides, a lot has changed too since they last spoke. Maybe...it would be better to just leave the past buried. 

He kept on walking, but stopped no more than four steps later. 

Sweet corn. Warm soil. Ink blue sky adorned with tiny specks of silver. Laughter.

He must admit he still cared. 

“Little spider?” It was what the kid’s mom called him - a nickname laced with affection. If anything could bring back those old memories, Cheng thought this would be it.

its quieter inside  the darkness of my mind than it ever was in the light. ( @miaxsilk​ ) 

the medic wing may be the oddest place for him to take up residency when he isn't injured but there is also something about it that brings about a sense of calm. maybe because this is the one place where his rank does not put him on top. the one place in the agency where he has to listen to someone else and no one here has to listen to him. relieving him of the responsibility that has begun to weight him down each and every day.

this life is not one that allows many to live long and sometimes daesu really wonders how he has made it to 28. his birthday is approaching and he finds himself wondering if maybe fate itself is laughing at him. 

the bed he has made himself comfortable on sits far enough back in the medic room he is in that not only is he out of direct line of sight but he is also out of everyone's way. a good thing to have kept in mind due to the fact that so much goes on in the medic wing as it is. mission prep, mission failures, training accidents. it would be wrong of him to get in the way.

it also helps that it is the later hour and really he should be in his own place sleeping for the next day of excitement but daesu found his mind was unable to rest. he thought that perhaps the vibe of the medic room would help as he rather not risk being in the library at this point. the attendants do not take kindly to people in the library after dark unless its for important work. 

the sound of foot steps on the floor has daesu looking up from the book he was reading. his eyes spotting the junior medic who sometimes works with his team. a grin pulls across his lips and he waits for insoo to be closer before calling out quietly. “insoo~”

insoo's chest hurts and he can't differentiate between the stress of all of the new information he's learned recently and the stress he feels because he's heading to the head agents to request a meeting. his chest hurts on juwon's behalf, but that hurt is sequestered away in a box that he will deal with later. right now he needs to be objective as a team leader and senior agent, with a small side of juwon's friend.

he'd sent out an inquiry to the meia heads just to let them know he wanted to speak to whoever was available so he had no idea who would be in the meeting room when he arrived. it was easier to convince himself he wasn't overreacting when it was on someone else's behalf and not his own.

"thank you for meeting with me," he says as he enters the room. "i know we are busy with all that's going on so i appreciate you sparing a few minutes-- i'll try to keep this short." he waits for acknowledgment and remains standing by the table.

"i'm not one to question any of the decisions of the head agents, within reason, because i know you have your eyes set on the betterment of us all and our safety. i've had no reason to disagree with anything that's happened in my time here." he breathes in to cool his nerves and makes eye contact. "i want to ask, as agent phantom's previous leader, previous co-agent, and a friend, that you allow him a visitor outside of the head agents during this time."

"i know this is for a short amount of time-- but even one person, a senior or anyone else, even under supervision, even just for an hour-- please let him see someone for a small amount of time until we move."

"agent phantom is mourning; as you know, i brought him here to confess and vouch on his behalf, he chose to give up his identity willingly and i think that speaks on his willingness to at least in future be loyal to meia. i don't see danger in him having some of his support system during this time and frankly i think it would do the opposite to keep him away from them."

insoo tries not to fidget his hands, anxious to get out of the room and away from even the hint of confrontation. "thank you for letting me speak my piece..."

Maylin new to expect someone to approach her regarding Juwon. The decisions for this had not been easy. The timing was terrible and even thought she had suspected there to be a mole in the agency she had yet to pinpoint who. Perhaps she should have seen this though. Connected the dots on Juwon's disappearance and then reappearance. It would explain the strange incidents...

It also makes her wonder about another agent who has a similar pattern. But she won't make any moves regarding that agent yet. Not until it becomes necessary.

Back to the matter at hand, Maylin was not surprised to see Insoo come into her office. She knew someone would but it had been a gamble on who would arrive first. Of course, someone who has worked with Juwon a lot recently. A new senior who has taken to the role swimmingly.

" As you know a vital part of keeping this agency alive and thriving is listening to and taking to heart messages from all the agents." She begins, leaning back in her chair and keeping her eyes on the other. "Your words have been heard and I understand your concern."

She sighs, pushing up from her chair and walking towards the long windows on the east side of the room. The sky is tinged red as if to say look, youre in the endgame now. but she wasn't bothered by it.

"I want nothing more than to allow Agent Phantom to return to his team and active duty." Maylin says, her back to Insoo as she gazes outside. "But not only has he broken loyalty to the agency--he broke his position as a spy. So while he does need to deal with the consequences of his actions, we also wish to protect him from backlash with Kaiser."

She turns towards insoo, expression grave. "Do you understand? We have no information if there is another spy, or if he's being watched. Once it's been revealed that his cover is blown he could be in grave danger. Something we want to avoid with the move coming."

Her eyes soften for a second as she looks at the senior medic before she turns back to the window. "Juwon will stay in solitary confinement under the guise of rest and recovery after losing Agent Star. There is only a few more days till we head out."

A beat of silence passes before Maylin nods her head.

"But I will allow you to visit him. You and Agent Helios only. I do not want information of his current situation to be spread around, so you understand me?" She waits for a response. "Do not forget to finish helping pack and get your own supplies ready. We move out soon."

She waves her hand, the door to her office sliding open. "You're free to go."

A demon has you and your team cornered. Your medic is down and you’re running out of energy. You notice that there is a way to escape but it would mean leaving your team. What do you do? Be honest.

He’d once been asked, when they picked him up off the street-- a lithe little thing who was out just trying to support his family, what he would do if he was cornered and given the chance of fight or flight. It was a hard question to answer at the time, he had something to prove and an image to project-- that he was strong and confident.

“I’d check on the conditions of everyone else and then make the escape-- but only to lure the demon out and away so everyone could make it back in one piece.”

He knew better now.

Firsthand, Insoo had learned that that idea, that dream, would only get him killed. Or, at least, knocking on death’s door with a firm set of knuckles.

His team was on a mission, there were children and young teens spread out in the room they’d been cornered into. It wasn’t an easy situation and Insoo had to think quick; a lot of his team temporarily down and it was quickly looking like the responsibility of getting them out of the situation was resting on his shoulders.

He could run, still had his weapons, could lead the two demons left out of the perimeter.

So he did. Insoo had patted his dual holsters, a habitual movement, before gaining the demons’ attention. It had been difficult to lead them to the roof, but he got there in one piece. The fight was gruelling, two against one, and they had no qualms against tag teaming when his back was turned to the other. He had just successfully taken down the one when he sensed the other behind him. There was no time to turn in defense, clawed hand creeping into his field of vision from behind, almost in slow motion the nails were slicing through the tender skin of his face.

Nothing could have prepared him for the pain he’d be in. Parts that shouldn’t have ever been exposed to air and elements, blood soon rushing from the wound. It felt like his face was splitting in half, his vision was washed red and pulsing.

Despite the feeling of burning up from the inside, he couldn’t let it get back inside--which it had then tried to do. His gun was running on an empty cartridge and he was running out of options. Maybe the pain had gotten to him and made him delirious because he had only registered his feet running towards the demon seconds after they were already flying off the side of the building.

His team found him minutes after, having seen them drop the few stories and Insoo bounce meters away from where he broke fall on the demon’s body. His body had been curled up, one hand spanning the huge gash along his face and the other on his broken ribs. They had punctured through and he knew his chances were low since backup was still on its way. Those moments were doused in hopelessness, resignation to his perceived fate, only sated over the fact that he’d been able to shield his team.

When Insoo awoke in the hospital days later, he learned about the weird energy that had connected his hands to his face and side and how it was probably the only reason he had woken at all.

“You know, when you first got here-- I looked through your orientation file.” It was one of the head medics, name flitting far away from Insoo in his medicated state. “I always knew you’d make your way into my medical wing one way or another based on your interview. One thing you’ll learn from this is you can’t always play the martyr, sometimes you have to have your own back.”
