has anyone read Michael Hicks’ biography of Anne Neville? is it any good? I just think Anne’s neat (and Isabel too, but man Anne had a hell of a life) but I know that unfortunately there’s not as much to go on for her.

I’m still waiting for a copy of K.L. Clark’s The Nevills of Middleham to get to me, but unfortunately it’s taking a while. any other book recs are appreciated, though! nothing too ricardian, please, if it can be avoided.

Hiyo! I saw your tags on the rb of my post, so here I am. :) would you happen to have any book recs on the Yorks during the war of the roses (or the Woodvilles for that matter?) I tentatively have The Yorkists: The History of a Dynasty by Anne Crawford and also The Yorkist Age: Daily Life During the Wars of the Roses by Paul Murray Kendall on my list, and they seem to be okay, but I was also wondering if you happened to have any experience with those two books. I have no experience with the books you just mentioned - although I’ve heard nothing bad about Crawford’s ‘The Yorkists’. PMK is a bit too richardian for my tastes - and whatever you do avoid Annette Carson and Markham!

For the Woodvilles I can recommend nothing but ‘The Knight and the Merchant’ by Grant Uden, which is a gorgeous narrative biography of Anthony Woodville and William Caxton. I’ve been meaning to get back to it, but unforch it’s in my other place. From what I’ve seen so far it’s lovely and insightful. However, at its base it’s a book about books, but even if you are not interested in Anthony’s printing career you might find quite a lot of tidbits about him and his world that you wouldn’t find in other places.

For Yorkists - I would 1000% recommend Hick’s ‘False Fleeting Perjur’d Clarence’. I’m not reccomending this out of some personal bias for the historical figure. This book was Hick’s doctoral work for Oxford and it is exquisite in its scholarship, so much so that it’s often referenced in works that have nothing to do with George Duke of Clarence because of how well it sets out the political-economic working of 15th century England. If you are not into stories about litigation, retainers and fee-farms it might be a dry read and I feel like Hicks is too conservative when it comes to source interpretation choosing to discredit most of them for the most common-sense approach. But if what you want is fact (and figures and tables!) and not pseudo-psychological takes then this is the book for you. Boy does the man know how to find his primary sources!

Furthermore, I recommend Hick’s ‘Bastard Feudalism’ ! It is the definite guide to understanding the Yorkist age as the time for gentry, competition within the nobility that it was. You get a sense of how shakey economics forced many into overlapping allegiances and that the collapse of the Plantagenets can be explained in a sophisticated manner that departs from the whole red rose vs white rose character drama. To get more balance, I would suggest getting Christine Carpenter’s ‘The Wars of the Roses: Politics and the Constitution’. Everyday I get depressed about the fact that that women is 74 and will retire any day now and I’ll miss my chance to study under her. She is the considered the ultimate authority on this subject and is a good one to read because her view differs significantly from Michael Hicks’.

Otherwise, I would suggest just diving into articles before you commit to anything. Both Hicks and Carpenter have plenty of articles online and on Jstor and I found that the best works on the Yorkists are PhD theses from no-names you find online. There is plenty out there particularly on how they engaged in political dialogue and many that use contemporary literature to define the ‘Yorkist culture’.
