Michael Kirkham (British, 1971), Black Cat, 2020. Oil on canvas
Artist Michael Kirkham activates a discourse on light that differs radically from the one that has been dominant during the past centuries. This discourse only remains, in the western tradition, in myths; it seemed definitively overcome with modernity.
Only in incidental artistic practices like that of solarization and with surrealist artists such as Man Ray, has this mythical discourse known some revivals. I am alluding to the animating effect of light. There, light does not have the function of making visible, of revealing, but it is life-creating. Itis not an epistemological instrument, but an ontological reality.
Light makes life; light is life.
