A Taste for Cognac by Brett Halliday (Dell Books, 1951)
Remembering Jeff Chandler (December 15, 1918 – June 17, 1961) on his birthday.
The silver-haired leading man is perhaps most famous for his Oscar-nominated turn as Cochise in Broken Arrow, but he could also be seen in Johnny O’Clock, Two Flags West, and - one of my favorites - the western noir Man in the Shadow, where Chandler played a town sheriff standing up to corrupt rancher Orson Welles.
Chandler was best known to radio audiences for two very different roles: as Philip Boynton, bashful biology teacher (and object of Connie Brooks’ affection), on Our Miss Brooks, and as Michael Shayne, the hard-boiled “reckless, red-headed Irishman” in The New Adventures of Michael Shayne. In addition to these front-and-center roles, Chandler could be heard on Suspense, Escape, Let George Do It, Adventures of Philip Marlowe, and more.
