Michael Stanley Dead at 72
Michael Stanley, the Cleveland music legend who almost broke it big with his eponymous band, died March 5 of lung cancer, his family said.
Stanley was 72 and had continued working as a classic-rock DJ in his hometown until recently.
“Michael battled lung cancer for seven months with the same strength and dignity he carried throughout his life,” his family said.
“He will always be remembered as a loving father, brother, husband, a loyal friend and the leader of one of Cleveland's most successful rock bands.”
The Michael Stanley Band had two national hits - 1981’s “He Can’t Love You” and ’83’s “My Town” - but was unable to recreate the success he found at home, where sold-out concerts were the norm and his music was the soundtrack.
“The energy of his music and its ability to bring people together helped to make Cleveland the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, and it galvanized the community to rally together and make our city the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris said in a statement. “We will miss Michael dearly.”
Stanley left a message with radio station WNCX, where he worked until Feb. 19, to be released after his death saying he was “off to catch up with that big club tour in the sky” and thanking his fans for their support.
“Somebody once that if you love your job, then it’s not really work,” he wrote. “And if that’s true ... then I have been happily out of work for more than 50 years.”
