A landlord accused of killing two tenants and stuffing their remains in suitcases has been found guilty on all charges, a jury ruled Thursday.
Michael Dudley, 64, killed Jessica Lewis and her boyfriend Austin Wenne. Their bodies washed ashore in suitcases on Alki beach in 2020. The crime was heavily publicized due to the gruesome nature of the crimes and the manner in which the bodies were discovered. An individual posted a video of the discovery on TikTok, causing the video to spread like wildfire across Seattle and across the country. Lewis and Wenne had been renters, living with Dudley at his home in Burien before they disappeared. Prosecutors had no eyewitnesses or scientists to directly link Dudley to the crime, but they had a mountain of circumstantial evidence which they said must have been coincidence if Dudley was innocent. Burien Police witnessed the house but no one was there. Dudley couldn't explain why he didn't answer the door during a police interview that night. The state used cellphone data to prove Jessica's phone stopped sending messages on the night of the reported shooting. Dudley, who claimed to be friendly, never got back in touch - they also used data to show he was near Alki Beach the day before a suitcase containing human remains was found at the hospital.
