I picked up a copy of Michael Heald's Goodbye to the Nervous Apprehension at Reading Frenzy just prior to my trip back home, and I read the entire thing on my journey from the west coast to the east coast yesterday. It's a collection of 11 autobiographical essays that span his 20s, and I have to be honest, some of them I like a lot more than others, but overall, I thought it was a thoughtful, (painfully) honest, and earnest account of being a twenty-something trying to figure things out.
Also, he writes a lot about being short, which is funny to me because both my boyfriend and I are about 5' 4'', which is how tall Michael is as well. It seems to have made a major impact on his psyche and his relationships.
I actually really enjoy being the same size as Eric. It is really handy because we can share clothes and even shoes. (!!!) Therefore, I get all of Eric's hand-me-down gear that is too expensive for me to want to buy on my own. Also, my apartment has really low ceilings, but they seem normal to both of us. When tall people come into my apartment, they have to be really careful not to hurt themselves.Â
The link goes to an OPB Think OutLoud interview with Michael about his book. In it he says some things about Portland that I just can't agree with enough.
