The picture above is of two World War II bombardiers. Bombardiers were members of the Air Force who would aim and target the bombs. School for bombardiers lasted anywhere between 12 to 18 weeks. While in school they were trained and had to practice dropping nearly 200 bombs a day. The bombardier usually flew the plane they would find a target using a sight lock on and drop the bomb. A bombardier was a higher ranking official relative to a bomb aimer. World War II bombers would be given the Bombardier Badge. This badge was more o like a license that represented that the bombardier had gone through proper training and had all the qualifications required to hold that position. Sometimes when flying over water some warships would be disguised as fishing vessels and shoot down planes. The sights used by the bombardiers were really unique, they were called the Norden Bombsight. There were a variety of planes flown by Bombardiers, but in the novel, Catch-22 Yossarian flies a B-25. At the time the B-25 was the standard plane used by bombardiers of the allied air forces. It is estimated that there were around 10000 planes built before the war.
