“Double Vision” at Robert Lange Studios.

Opening on December 6th, 2019 at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina is the duet exhibition, “Double Vision,” with work from artists June Stratton and Michelle Jader.

These two artists paint emotionally filled figurative pieces but in very different ways, using different mediums. Stratton initially builds up her background composition using oil paint in multiple layers and various thicknesses and then adds gilded elements that stand off the canvas.  Jader, using the same models as Stratton, adds an element of motion to the show by working on multiple panels of acrylic.

The exhibition will be on view until December 27th, 2019.

Layered Paintings by Michelle Jader

Michelle Jader originally from Minnesota, is a figurative artist based in San Francisco. Michelle worked for nearly 10 years as a marketing consultant before following her heart and earning an MFA in fine art painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco.

My work explores moments when we willingly and unwillingly dive into the next phase of our life. Whether it’s moving to a new city, starting or ending a relationship, having a baby, or quitting a job, these moments of endings and beginnings are alternately terrifying and exhilarating. Ready or not, we jump, fall or are pushed, and our lives change. Transitions like these include the sense of falling, lack of control, and the feeling that anything is possible. We’re vulnerable in these moments and despite our best efforts, our actions seem to be more public than other times in our lives. To capture these feelings, I paint a series of images on semi-transparent, acrylic panels. The push and pull inherent in having different layers of images support the work’s theme and provide an exciting way to paint motion, change and emotional release. Each oil painting consists of several layers of semi-transparent acrylic panels. They are stacked in front of one another to add depth and emphasize the feeling of movement.

Hazy Paintings of Bodies in Mid-Motion Capture the Surreal In-Between Limbo of Life

When she first embarked upon her solo journey across the United States, in January 2021, Michelle Jader expected to only be away for a year. San Francisco’s skies were painted orange from wildfire smoke and the COVID-19 pandemic was still raging throughout the city by the time she left. Feeling “emotionally and creatively caged,” the artist ended up on the road for two years, visiting art communities, staging pop-up photo shoots, and creating her own paintings across 36 states. Now, Jader’s travels are the focus of her latest solo exhibition at Robert Lange Studios in South Carolina.
