Zelda sleeps, and Link listens.
He isn’t sure when it started again, his insomnia, just that ever since they returned home he hasn’t been able to close his eyes without seeing her falling into darkness with nothing but jagged rocks at her back.
He needs to know she’s here. He needs to know it’s over. He needs-
“Link,” she murmurs, sliding her arm across his waist, “You’re thinking too loud.”
“Sorry,” he whispers, splaying his fingers across the center of her spine and feeling her breathe, feeling her exist beside him instead of in the stars, mindlessly circling through the sky. “We’re okay, right?”
She squeezes his right hand, intertwines their fingers, and kisses his cheek. “We’re okay. Close your eyes.”
Open your-
She leans up and kisses his lips. “Close your eyes.”
He closes his eyes. Her fingers twitch against his as she drifts back into sleep.
He counts her breaths against his palm, feels the warmth of her skin, and all he sees is her smile as she cries, I’m home!
Link sleeps.
