In which Cecil enjoys a calm morning with his wife 💖

"Still don't get why you call me that." Cecil's knotting his tie as he says it, seated on the edge of the bed in the master bedroom of their little row house in Alexandria. Their morning routine is always like this: A kiss, a shower, a quick breakfast, getting ready together. He'll teleport and Mila will take the car, so as to not arouse suspicion, but it makes very little difference. Their marriage is an open secret at this point.

Mila sits at the vanity across the room, and she asks, "What?" She leans close to the mirror, applying mascara with practiced precision, just a few quick flicks of her wrist. He could watch her do this all day. It's fascinating, seeing her in her element like this. "What did I call you?"

As if she doesn't know. She's too smart to play dumb. Cecil smiles a little, just a wry lift of the unscarred corner of his mouth. "Baby," he says, and she looks up, snagging his gaze through the mirror. The word feels ridiculous on his tongue. She's darling or sweetheart or even pumpkin, when he got wasted after Donald's first death, but she's never been baby to him. "I'm twenty years older than you."

"Sixteen, actually," she points out, as if those four years make any difference.

His eyes roll, though his half-smile stays on. "Still," he says.

Mila turns, meeting his gaze head-on and teasing, "Want me to call you daddy instead?"
