General Public's debut studio album was released on 28 January 1984.
After the break up of the English Beat (known as the Beat in the UK) in 1983, Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling form General Public, with Mick Jones (who had been fired from the Clash in September 1983), Mickey Billingham, Stoker Growcott, and Horace Panter. While Jones appears on more than half the songs on the album, he left before its release and does not appear on the album cover (his replacement, Kevin White, is pictured).
While selling poorly in the UK, All the Rage spent 39 weeks on the US Billboard chart, peaking at #26. The album's success was driven in part by the song "Tenderness," which appeared in Sixteen Candles (released in May 1984) and Weird Science (released in August 1985).
