rThe Art and Design of Spider Silk through April 19, 2020
Now at the Rhode Island School of Design, also known as RISD (pronounced riz-dee) is a show by spiders and about spiders. We all know spiders make silk, and so do engineers, artists, and designers who have been impressed with the look and the strength of spider webs. Some of them have tried to copy it insto man-made fibers like Microsilk. This show looks at “cutting-edge uses of spider silk” which you see in the shawl at the top which is made of silk from Madagascar by created by golden orb spiders (I would look to see how big they grow but the idea is too scary!). The black sweater, which seems to be two layers, is the Spider Web Sweater by Radioactivity for their Autumn/Winter 1998-99 collection. And last we have a 1927 French dress that is spidery.
This is possibly the weirdest fashion and design show I have heard of, and would have been perfect for Halloween, but you can still go there and read more here: https://risdmuseum.org/exhibitions-events/exhibitions/art-and-design-spider-silk
