Placed an HD line and didn't get any blood on the chuck under the patient so I'm counting that as a win.
(My dressing was terrible as per usual, and replaced immediately by the nurse as per usual.)
At the beginning of intern year I was somewhat disappointed that I would be doing MICU during the summer because I would miss out on the time of year when there is a lot of respiratory illness.
COVID is all like BITCH U THOUGHT!!!
Somehow I’m emotionally exhausted from MICU but at the same time wanting to cry all the time. Probably cried 2 days out of 4-5.
I have a patient who is suffering and should be comfort care but basically the family member was telling other family members she wants to keep him alive so she can keep getting his social security checks so that she can “keep looking lavish.”
When you have a nightmare of a 30-hr call but your co-resident takes your phone for four hours to let you sleep, your intern brings you coffee in the morning, and your fellow and attending let you leave rounds after presenting the overnight admission....I love my program 😭🥰😭🥰
When I was on ICU we had a patient on comfort care whose last wish was to not die in the hospital. He knew he couldn’t go home, but he didn’t want to die in the ICU. He was really really unstable, but we got him set up with admission to hospice and an ambulance transport and everything. He was so unstable that an ICU nurse rode with him to hospice, which is definitely not standard practice.
And it was so amazing because his family was so unbelievably sad that they were watching this happen, but at the same time they were completely dedicated to honoring his wishes even if it meant he might die in the ambulance en route to hospice. They just really didn’t want him to have to die in the hospital. And the nurse promised that she’d hold his hand and make sure that he wasn’t really alone if that happened. If she hadn’t volunteered to go with him, there’s no way that any of this would have worked and he would have died in this hospital)
And because of all of that, he made to hospice. And only once his whole family was there did he pass.
