Look. Everyone KNOWS that 8 years isn't enough for a generation. We understand that generations are 20-30 years.
But generations were invented to describe a group of people that all experienced the world in roughly the same way. Environment influences behavior. people who grew up in 1970-1980 had similar enough environments that they, very broadly, have similar understandings of life.
But now life changes much more quickly than it used to. The millennial-Gen Z divide is really murky, because there's no clear cut change, and there's a whole subset of people who don't quite fit. The late 90s to early 2000s saw substantial change in technology, from it being bulky and expensive to available to everyone.
Someone who was a kid in 2005 and used computers shaped like cubes and remembers the drastic change to laptops thinner than a VCR had a fundamentally different childhood than 2010s kids who frequent YouTube and console games like it's nothing.
We KNOW 1997-2004 isn't really enough years to make a generation. But we don't really Fit anywhere else. So what the fuck do you propose we call it?
