I just had my first rehearsal for The Grunch at Ooltewah Middle School where I am the Theatre Arts teacher. This is my first year in this subject. Expectations for the show are high, both mine and the school’s. Silly me, I picked a new musical for this year’s show. If you pick a new show, no one can research (YouTube) the show. But luckily, this show is tailored for young actors and all the roles are gender neutral. I had no boys audition. Middle school guys apparently don’t sing. So, there has been a lot of script editing (with permission from the publisher/writer). I may also need to add a few more actors. I wonder if it is better to re-audition or just recruit kids I have directed before.
The 1st rehearsal was mostly a success. We just did an introduction game and then a read/sing through. There are some strong performers in the cast who are anxious to get to work. But several of the girls are scared to death. I hope I am convincing when I tell them those feelings will ease as they become more familiar with their characters, songs, and story. Most have never done anything like this.
Side note: I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture of the cast. Oh well. I’ll get one on Monday.
Hopefully I can keep notes here and maybe get some feedback on the process and product. Monday is the next rehearsal with a parent meeting after that. I want the kids to do the show’s “hook” song at the meeting for the parents. Some strong singers are going to be missing because of a Beta club trip. I’ll decide when I see how it goes.
Thanks for reading,
Chris
