I don't know much about this Tycho feller but my assumption is that he likes to give gifts that seem thoughtful but only serve to make HIM seem more interesting like copies of books that are considered really 'advanced' 😂 and maybe you find it cute! And yes! That is really in character for Tycho! Though, I think he would genuinely be interested in books like you described! And him giving me a copy of an advanced book would be like "here I love and cherish this text, therefore by giving it to you it shows that I love and cherish you too." But also "here this book is interesting and advanced and only important people read it, I am important people."
So, I guess it (the book) would have a double meaning in that way.
And, my response is initially something like, "Aww this is so sweet of you Tycho! <3" But I would only react that way cause I was raised to appreciate gifts and be nice to the person giving me the gift, even if it wasn't actually a good gift. So internally I'm like, "god I don't want to read this fucking thing." And I wouldn't put much effort into reading it.
...And then its brought up in later conversation like "did you enjoy the book I gave you?" And internally I'm like "oh shit". Cause I probably put that book on a shelve or something and let it gather dust. And it would quickly come out that I didn't care for the book. And maybe Tycho is a bit upset by that at first, but he comes to understand that I didn't mean anything by it.
