It’s just a harmless little bunny, isn’t it? Perhaps not.
Killer bunnies are a surprisingly common theme in medieval illuminated manuscripts. Often, they are intended as a humorous reversal of the stereotypical trope of rabbit vs. rabbit-hunter. But why is this little hunter riding a snail? Medieval historians have varying theories about the prevalence of these shelled creatures in illustrated books: could they be symbols of death, religious imagery, or are snails just funny?
