Midnight Gathering

There’s a bio major who doesn’t have a roommate. Well, Shepard had a roommate, had a few roommates actually, and a few not-roommates, but she doesn’t have one anymore. She says she has a hard enough time sleeping without another person to interfere. It has nothing to do with her garden of tubes that takes up more than half the room, she says.

The RA says she kept adding more on in between each roommate change until they couldn’t fit a roommate.

Shepard says she built the hydroponics system after they stopped trying.

The RA says she’s clearly a human because only a human can lie their ass off like that.

Shepard doesn’t say anything to that, other that sticking out her tongue.

Once in awhile in the middle of the night she’ll start to wake people up and bring them outside. If you go with her you will wait some minutes in the cold with bare feet in wet grass while she points to the top of the trees somewhere and says, “there, it’ll show up over there somewhere, keep watching and tell me if you see it”.

When Shepard sees the little light, because she always sees it first, she’ll shout for everyone to look, look, there it is!

She speaks with the stars reflecting in her eyes of the little dot, she says it’s a space station, she says there are people up there. She asks if you can imagine being up there and looking down on the beautiful blue planet from the stars. She reminds you for the millionth time that she chose Shepard for the first American in space, Alan Shepard. She speaks of science in poetic terms rather than jargon, of growing plants in weightlessness and harvesting sunshine, of history and dreams. She asks everyone to wave to the people up there, even though it’s not like they can see. She says she’ll be up there one day. Maybe not on that space station in particular, but some day she’ll be out there in the sky. She asks you to wave to her sometime.

After the blinking dot- sorry, International Space Station passes out of view you stand in silence for a moment. Shepard squints into the distance before confirming that it’s gone. She says it’s a shame her phone can’t capture a picture of it. She says this every time.

You and everyone else go back to wherever you were before you were shaken awake by an enthusiastic sophomore. You don’t know how she picks people to come with, but you’ll be glad you were one of them, if you do go. You’ll think about it later and realize going outside at night is everything you’ve ever been told not to do. You’ll also realize no one was Taken.

If you really think back, you’ll remember someone going back towards the woods instead of the dorms after. You’ll remember that someone just kinda Disappeared. You’ll remember these people were not part of the group that Shepard woke up in the first place, and showed up in the first few minutes of waiting. You remember too, how despite your lack of interest initially, you were caught up in Shepard’s enthusiasm.

You wonder if humans aren’t the only ones susceptible to Shepard’s starry eyes.
