Yall, today something became real which has thus far been only a dream and a wish…. I was given the HONOR of naming a Bald Eagle eaglet. And what’s more… REUNITING her with her INDIGENOUS NAME!!!
I have been following a new, mostly unknown, local nest very closely- I first saw it November 2024, I reported it as an active nest in february this year, and I have been making many visits to check on the adults and eaglet 🥹♥️
I’ve been calling the eagles at the nest “Migizi”, an Indigenous name for bald eagles from Ojibwemowin, or, Anishinaabemowin- the languages of the Anishinaabe and Ojibwe Indigenous peoples. I’ve heard this name many times in the stories of Richard Wagamese, and I remember and think about his teachings whenever I go out to see the Migizis ♥️🥹 And today, that small gesture was made into something much bigger. The adults have already been named by a local photographer, but I posted on our local eagle page about their eaglet having fledged (way to go migizi!!!🥹♥️), and the name Migizi has really caught on and been reaffirmed!! Even by the photographer who named the adults!!!!
It’s looking like we’ve done it!!! We’ve really named the eaglet Migizi!!!!!!!! WE REALLY DID ITTT!!!!!
