US for local solution to migrant issue
The United States have stressed on regional solution to the issue of drifting sea migrants and urged countries to accommodate the people at their vicinity.
“…we urge governments to continue to accommodate these people who are on the seas in their vicinity,” said Jeff Rathke, director of the US State Department’s press office.
Saying that there is no US initiative for rescuing the drifting migrants at sea, he said: “This is a regional issue. It needs a regional solution in short order.”
Shortly after uncovering of the inhumane life of human trafficking victims following the discovery of mass graves in Thailand, more migrants are being found at sea everyday.
They have been turned away from the coasts of Malaysia, Indonesia after vessels carrying those fortune seekers tried to harbor following a heavy crackdown launched to curb trafficking.
“…we’re concerned about the situation. We urge the countries of the region to work together to save lives at sea… The priority is to save lives,” Jeff Rathke said in yesterday’s daily press briefing.
“We appreciate that the governments of the region have accommodated many Rohingya and other refugees and we urge them to continue to do so,” he added.
