“I wouldn’t go that way if I were ya”. 

Her warning was ignored. 

Well he deserved everything that came next. 

She watched from her branch, shuffling onto her front to get a better view of what was about to happen. Isabel had watched the group dig the hole, ready for an unsuspecting visitor to fall into it. And that he did. 

The teen had been watching them for a few days now, since they had almost trapped her, she had managed to escape to the trees, trying to find a way past their hold up. But she couldn’t let them get to this guy. She was going to get there first. He could help her. 

Scurrying down the tree, hands and feet skilled with climbing, her backpack secured on her shoulders, Isabel snuck up, her head poking over the top of the ditch. Pigtails dangling, she smirked as she threw an apple down to him. “I did warn ya” she laughed, “There’s a group of hunters ‘round here. Y’better figure out a way t’get out before they come” Isabel taunted, knowing they had built it in a way he couldn’t climb out. They had clearly been doing this for a while. 

She looked down at the man, he did look like he could handle himself if the hunters did come for him, the weapons on his shoulders were intimidating enough. “I’d eat the apple, they’re probably gonna starve ya so y’got no fight” That’s what these people did right? Take what they can get and then eat what’s left...

" the silence was almost unnerving in comparison to tommy's usual constant chatter. she had never wanted someone to speak so much before. never wanted silence filled. but there was something about the man that made her unsure and she fucking hated being unsure. was this how tommy felt on all of their little journeys to the dam ? shit. She halts in her little display of copying his grumpy expression and movement when he turns about towards her, tightened arms crossed at her chest slowly lowering just as matched expression to him vanishes. 

“-That’s how you sound like; grumble grumble”.

Brows furrow as her nose is hidden deep within some surviving cookbook, the pages aged and yellowed, with some of the words having faded away it seems quite some time ago. It’s difficult to read because of it, gaze flickering up when Joel seems to pass by, already starting his means of cooking the meal. “-So are you like,  gonna go into chef mode or something? Cause I have zero idea what to really do here.”

There’s a flush of embarrassment that rises on her cheeks, huff of a breath escaping her as arms come to a tight cross. “No, I’m fine.”

Though? The few minor cuts that continue to spill crimson down her arms and a particular one on her cheek state otherwise.

A fist rises to wipe away at her tears, as though angered she was even crying in the first place. It wasn’t as though emotion was such a terrible thing - it was something human, something everyone went through, but god, couldn’t she just be stronger like him?

His arms wrap around her, and where there had been tension in her shoulders slowly starts to relax, a breath escaping her chest as her own arms are swift to wrap around him, embrace tight as a choked sob escapes in a muffle against his shirt.

The infected'd come from nowhere. One moment, it was miles of grass and sunlight and freedom - the next, Wylan was face-down in said grass, a heavy weight atop his back, praying for the best. A quick end would be preferable but any end would be better than turning into that. They waited for the inevitably terrible outcome, braced to be torn apart -- -- but it never came. The weight atop him slumped to the side and all Wylan could do was lay there for a moment, curled up on his side, arms wrapped around his head and his eyes squeezed tight shut. Slowly, he lowered his arms, opened his eyes, and squinted up into the bright sky. A face swam into view, blocking out the sunlight. He spoke, and Wylan realised belatedly that he was waiting for an answer. "Yes," he said, hastily scrambling to his feet. He dusted himself off, mentally took stock of himself. Unharmed, but shaken and shaking. They were lucky. Really lucky. "Yes," he repeated, swallowing and looking at his saviour now that he was upright once more. "Thank you. I - well, without you, I wouldn't have stood a chance. Lucky you just so happened to be passing by." He hesitated, glanced down at his rucksack. They had no valuables, but he didn't know that. "You did just - it is just a coincidence, isn't it? It's an awful lot of effort to go to, to save me, just to mug me now. Right? Sorry. What I mean to say is thank you for saving my life."
