Tomodachigate: The biggest bullshit made out of nothing Nintendo has ever had to deal with
Disclaimer: This post in never meant to imply at all that homosexuality or same sex marriage is wrong in any way. I, RedGold, support same sex equality, including marriage. I am defending Nintendo because I feel this situation was specifically crafted specifically to attack Nintendo for ridiculous and false reasons.
Tomodachi Life is a life simulation game. Different from Animal Crossing, T-Life (which I will be calling the game from now on) is based much more on reality than its AC counterpart. Sequel to the Japanese exclusive Tomodachi Collection on the DS that was released in 2009 for the DS. One of the most important parts is T-Life was released in Japan in 2013. The other part is that there was a bug which apparently made it possible for the game for same gendered people to get married in the game, as it was never intended at all. The same glitch also caused game file corruption so Nintendo HAD to fix. Which is very similar to the glitch in Pokemon X and Y which corrupted your save if you save on the street of Lumiose City, which also got fixed with patching.
A year later, due to the success of T-Life in Japan, Nintendo decided to release the game in North America. However, one month before T-Life was to be released, a bunch of horrible gaming news sites, who were having fun denigrating Nintendo for their recent financial loss, decided to misinterpret story about the glitch being fixed into Nintendo being homophobic and anti-gay. Ignoring all the actual reasons for the bug fix and that it actually happened a year ago. This was never included in any of the news stories and I actually found out from a friend of mine and I verified the information on Wikipedia.
And because of all this fucking bullshit being fabricated, tons of people were attacking Nintendo all over again just for this bullshit; without doing any research. Then a movement called MiiQuality came to fruition. Headed by Tye Marini, a male Nintendo fan who had a male fiancé was talking about his plea for Nintendo to change the game to include same sex marriage, how many games like T-Life had the option of same sex marriages, and how Nintendo is alienating the LGBT community. As he was against boycotting, his idea seems really well, except that it ended up being co-opted the hateful, radical end of the LBGT community, who decided to attack Nintendo viciously over this fucked up spinned issue. Doing no research and having a vile disposition, they were asinine and ridiculous beyond belief during the situation. These fuckers give the LGBT a horrible fucking name and is actually making things worse for gay people with this kind of vicious behavior.
Nintendo responded with an apology press release. They stated how the glitch was meant to fix the issue of game corruption; that same sex marriage was never part of the game; apologizing for any horrible misshap of any anti-LGBT misconception; that the next installment will incorporate more for all gamers of all sexual orientations; that the game cannot be patched to include same sex marriage; and finally that the game is too late to change and is being produced (not in that order).
Nintendo, a Japanese based company, based T-Life off of their culture. This is the main reason why things such as homosexual marriage is not included, as gay marriage in Japan as not legal and not considered a good norm in that region. This obviously is alienating to the Western and European audiences and a narrow minded perspective that leads to sexist implications. However, the majority of established relationships is Male and Female across the world, so it is naturally the most traditionally accepted marriage across the world. So it actually makes sense that many people would consider straight marriage to be the norm and gay marriage to seem strange. Again, I do support gay marriage and I do believe that it would been a good addition to T-Life. However, this is not something that has been socially accepted in Japan as it in other pertinent parts of the world yet. And as stated in the press released, the possibility of same sex marriages in future T-Life released is no more possible.
But the biggest question is: If the Media did not spread the horrible misconceptions of this horrible debacle (which later had to be debunked by the company themselves to cover their asses) in the most hell bent way possible, would all horrible backlash even exist? I don’t think so. If things like this never happened, the glitch would have at most been a reference in “Did You Know Gaming?”. Sure some people would feel alarmed by this, but MiiQuality would not be happening, and tons of assholes of the worst parts of the LBGT community would not treat Nintendo like Chick-Fil-A over this overblown situation. People like moviebob (who I will cover next) would not be attacking Nintendo to score points with Feminists and the worst of LGBT. It’s a clusterfuck made out of nothing just to make Nintendo to villain. Seeing this after all fucking horrible articles and videos about how Nintendo is going to die and how they need to make the console some stupid entry point console, this Tomodachigate shit drove me to the deep end and now I have no tolerance with any anti-Nintendo shit. It pretty much was the penultimate event that ended up me making this blog.
And as a side note: Mentioning the Sims series in a positive light is a bit nauseating. The franchise is from Electronic Arts, a horrible company who makes horribly asinine and offensive marketing decisions; is responsible for publishing and making some of the worst games ever (Shaq-Fu and the newest DRM SimCity abomination, respectively); and now consistently lambasting Nintendo. Mentioning EA franchises like that adds another negative spin as EA has become such a nasty company that I ended clearing out all of my EA games off my collection to boycott that disgusting company.
How about instead of vilifying Nintendo as Lucifer, you focus all that fucking energy on more important matters going on at the same time, like Net Neutrality being a thing of the past. Not implying that it’s the fault of MiiQuality (it had no impact helping Tom Wheeler’s bullshit decisions at all), but what is objectively more important: Being able to marry your respective desired gender in a video game, or having to pay much higher bill for quality internet connection?
Nintendo really did not need to apologize for all this stupid shit as it was NEVER their fucking fault. It was the fault of the fucking media for spinning the fucking story like record player to make Iwata into Dan fucking Cathy and Nintendo into the “bigots” that they never were in the first place.
