W.A.S.P. have quickly become one of my new favorite bands in the last several months (I was introduced to them by Razorfist on Youtube). My favorites stretch their entire discography, even some underrated gems that don’t get near the love they should! Here’s my top 20 W.A.S.P. songs!

Tuesday, December 1: Killing Machine, “Vicious Circle”

James Rivera never delivered a less than committed performance, but he began to stretch himself thin with Killing Machine: by 2000 he was running two other bands concurrently (though Helstar was somewhat dormant at the time), and his fronting yet another modern American power metal act was a bit much.  That said, “Vicious Circle” was performed with fury and conviction by everyone involved, including the ex-W.A.S.P. rhythm section of Mike Duda and Stet Howland, who were presumably just glad not to have to deal with Blackie Lawless for a few minutes.  Of course, there was nothing unexpected about this, especially for Rivera, though the man’s penchant for consistency and quality ensured that the track would at least be an enjoyable headbang.  And to the singer’s credit, he actually kept Killing Machine going for another record, albeit with a different rhythm section and after joining even more bands.  Perhaps that latter point finally broke the camel’s back for Rivera, since Killing Machine hasn’t been heard from since 2005.

Monday, February 6: W.A.S.P., “Cocaine Cowboys”

Coming in right after the muddled and muddy K.F.D. was roundly rejected by pretty much everyone, Helldorado was intended as a return to W.A.S.P.’s mid ‘80s Sunset Strip sleaze metal sound.  And for the most part, the record was true to its mission, as it was full of glam-fried metal infused with skeezy hooks and Blackie Lawless’ indefatigable yowling about sex, drugs, fast cars and making everyone around him really uncomfortable.  “Cocaine Cowboys” may have been about guitarist and theoretically reformed nutcase Chris Holmes, but it definitely roared like the W.A.S.P. of yore, with Mike Duda and Stet Howland powering what might have been the best rhythm section Blackie ever employed. It didn’t restore the band’s popularity, but “Cocaine Cowboys” played to Blackie’s strengths as a writer and performer, delivering a magnificently braindead holler that shot out the gates with little more than momentum and testosterone, much like W.A.S.P.’s most famous tunes.
