Sometimes it seems like certain people are marked for unluckiness or doom. Mike and his younger twin, Violet, were two of these people. Their home life was unstable and rocky and, though Mike had an easier time pushing it aside than he thought his sister did, it still bothered him. It was living in a state of constant unsettled feelings and no matter how hard you tried, it was unnerving to be in day in and day out. It hardly helped that both twins seemed skilled at reading the situations and people around them. It went alright, though, until their mother was murdered. Their father changed then, warping into someone that Mike saw as only a threat from then on, someone that he had to protect his sister from. He rarely slept from then on, taking the position of her protector against even their father. This was seen as paranoia and heightened anxiety, no one ever considering that he might be right to sense danger. His bond with Violet grew until they became convinced it was psychic. It made sense in a way no other part of his life did, he found, and it also was the most comforting aspect of his life. Even his own sexuality was something he felt unsure in and even scared of, causing himself to withdraw a little more from socializing.
Slowly, it became known to both twins that their mother’s murderer was after them now. The stress outwardly affected Violet more than her brother, bringing many accusations of her being crazy thrown her way. Mike took these personally, always ready to square up against them or anyone else if need be. He began sleeping on his sister’s bedroom floor, something that had gotten him in trouble with their father once. The man refused to take their side in their fight or their pleas for help, making him marked as that much more of a possible enemy in the eyes of his son, whose own paranoia was warping every aspect of his mind and making the once extroverted boy more and more withdrawn. With both twins seen as unaccredited, there was no one they could turn to for help, leaving them as sitting ducks. Together, they got through the first attack but the second nearly ended in disaster. They fled together, searching for anywhere that they could go that might be safe.
They spent time on the road, going from place to place as they tried to find safety. It was due to a family friend that they heard about Lethe and decided that it might be a good place to lay low. Mike was all for it, eager for a place where they could feel safe. However, his own paranoia hasn’t quite let this happen. He trusts very few people, even though he’s trying to let himself find a home and even friends. But the New Year’s incident did nothing but raise his alarm and paranoia, the arson not helping him relax any. Now, Mike is very watchful and weary of everything around them and is overwhelmingly on edge and eager to protect his sister at any cost from anyone necessary.
