When Miles Davis called jazz pianist Mike Nock at home in New York during the 1970s the first thing the trumpeter said was, “They tell me you’re a genius.” Although Nock replied with something typically self-effacing, he later commented, “I should have said, ‘that’s right, man. We should get together.’ ” Mike was actually born in New Zealand, but since he’s been living, playing and teaching jazz in Sydney since the mid eighties, I’m claiming him as an Aussie for Aussie Friday. He first embedded himself in the Sydney jazz scene in 1958 at the age of 18, after stowing away on a boat from Auckland. His trio “3-out” soon became one of the most popular jazz groups in Sydney. He spent the sixties and seventies in America. He started in New York, but soon moved to San Francisco where he formed one of the first jazz fusion bands “The Fourth Way”. They were invited to be the opening act for The Miles Davis Quintet on one occasion. As luck would have it, The Fourth Way was on fire that night and Davis found himself upstaged by the young San Francisco group. Miles reportedly said, “Man, I’m never going on second again!” Today’s track Visionary comes from what many would call his best album Ondas. It was recorded in New York in just 2 hours, and received high praise from the critics - a glorious recording by a crack batch of musicians. Mike will turn 80 in September. Even though he retired a from his teaching role at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2018 (at 78!), he still performs, teaches, records and tours. To my knowledge, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Visionary – Mike Nock Yep. I reckon he is. – Bozzie 🎷
