New Tasting Notes: cabernet sauvignon

You don’t have to spend big money to buy seriously good, ready-drinking cabernet in this country. There’s plenty of value for money in our cabernet sauvignon and cabernet-based blends, as my latest tasting of more than 125 new releases showed.

Here’s a list of some of the sub-$30 wines I thought superior value for money, ranged from cheapest to dearest.

There were of course some blinders at higher prices, too. The latest release of Yalumba prestige reds, The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (tasting), The Signature Cabernet Shiraz 2012 (tasting) and FDR1A Cabernet Shiraz 2011 (tasting) are superb, as is the 2009 Tahbilk Eric Stevens Purbrick Cabernet Sauvignon (tasting) and the two 2010 Voyager Estate Project cabernets (tastings). And the two new Cherubino 2012 cabernet sauvignons, one from Frankland River (tasting), the other Margaret River (tasting), showcase this exciting producer in top form.

Yalumba’s 2011 FDR1A (FDR stands for Fine Dry Red) brought back memories of the debut vintage of this wine, the 1974. In the Barossa, 2011 was said to be the worst (ie. wettest and mouldiest) vintage since the dreadful 1974. The ‘74 FDR1A was an excellent wine that lived and drank superbly for decades. It defied the elements that year, as the new release apparently also did in 2011. Enjoy!
