Ma'at is the ancient Egyptian ideal of elevating your soul to a higher level of existence. At death, in the Hall of Two Truths, you would be met by Anubis.
Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the underworld, sat in judgment of souls. Your heart would be weighed against the goddess Ma'at's feather. If your heart was pure and guided by the divine principles so as to be lighter than Ma'at's feather, you would journey on into the afterlife.
But, if the weight of your sins and failure to live in harmony caused your heart to carry more weight than Ma'at's feather, you would be cast down to be devoured by Ammit the crocodile-headed goddess and destroyed for all eternity.
