Alternative Press's Class of 2004?
The head of Alternative Press, Mike Shea just posted this picture on his social media sites:
With a caption that stated: "In the new issue of @altpress - out now. Should we do one for 2004 next year?"
As for me personally I think a resounding yes is the response. As a reader of the magazine since the fall of 2006 or 2007 (Coheed was the cover star on the first issue I bought) I have really enjoyed these Class Of features.
Oh the one hand it goes and covers albums that I may have missed in the past and then also I can go back and read about some of my favourite albums from past years.
The Class Of feature also serves as a way for new readers and people who have just started listening to music from this "scene" to learn what has come before. It will also help when they wonder why these older bands like Pennywise, ETID, Further Seems Forever are headlining main stage at Warped or Bamboozle or Skate And Surf along with their favourite bands of the moment.
In previous years I have tried to predict based on the wikipedia article for albums released the next year who would make the next years list. Sometimes you may be surprised who was left off the list.
Another point about these segments and someone commented on the Instagram post of the picture saying this that its cool to see who in todays band were impacted and influenced by these older albums. As for me especially when I don't care for some of these newer bands it is cool see you has some of the same favourite albums as me.
I think features like this are great and they would be greatly missed if AltPress got rid of them. On another note I think that AltPress should bring back the Oral History feature. Some of those were great. It was cool to hear the history of bands or tours or even bands current tour. I will never forget the oral history they did of one Dillinger Escape Plan Tour.
There's my two cents, maybe sometime this week I will post my Class of 2003.
