Schooled. Again.

Last night I happened upon Mila sitting at the coffee table pouring the contents of one (bright blue) magic potion test tube into another (bright red) magic potion test tube. Right over our new(ish) cowhide rug, which recently got some bright blue streaks courtesy of the hair crayons she got for her birthday. Without thinking, I yelled something heartless to the effect of, “Do that in the kitchen! That rug is the nicest thing we own, I don’t want you ruining it!” 

She raised her eyebrows, test tube cocked, and said, “Really? It’s the nicest thing we own?” 

Obviously I couldn’t back down at that point, so I said (snapped), “Yes. Really.” 

She calmly stood up and picked up her test tubes. As she carried them to the kitchen she said, without looking at me and without a hint of malice, “Do you know what my favorite ‘thing’ in the whole world is mummy?”

“What?” I asked.

“My family.”

Well, don’t I feel like the asshole. Again.

And we’re off

Mila started second grade today, just two days after her seventh birthday. I spent most of yesterday cleaning and cleaning out in the hopes that if we started the new school year with the house (somewhat) in order it would set a good precedent (intention?) for the whole year. (Worth a shot, right?) 

Everyone made it up in time and we had a nice, peaceful morning getting ready. On the way to the car I snapped a quick first day of school pic, ready for the obligatory IG/FB post. I moved the toys out of the way, aware that all my photographer friends would pounce on any badly placed props/set dressing, just like they did with this basketball and this banana. 

After we hugged our school friends, mourned summer’s quick passing and lamented such an early start to the school year, found Mila’s class, and then walked seven miles back to our car, I went to post it with a witty caption like, “Let’s do this, second grade,” (or something better - I’m sure I could’ve got there), ready to let the “likes” roll in like waves on the beach. 

Then I noticed the perfectly placed bright yellow bag of dog shit in the background, casually dropped right by the front steps.  

So yeah, we’re off to another great start.
