Found wood
"Located somewhere between painting and sculpture, Mildred Thompson's collages combine found and manipulated wood into abstract compositions. Here you can even see the faint remains of a lumber stamp on one of the salvaged planks. With these works, Thompson rejected figuration to offer subtle and evocative reflections on history, memory, and place. She was deeply committed to the language of abstraction, all the while interrogating what it meant to be a Black artist, pushing against pressure from her peers to make work dealing more overtly with the politics of identity." - Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, May 2023
