First published as a book in 1827, the eastern baroque-style historical drama was so well received that during the same year, it saw two more editions, and its writer; Jovan Sterija Popović decided to turn it into a playwright in 1834, marking his debut in drama.
Though first premiered at an inn, the drama was later performed in the writer’s private theater in Belgrade, Serbia in the 1840s.
The story focuses on Mileva; the sister of Knez Stefan and her lover Svetislav, as they face major difficulties and sorrows as her upcoming marriage to Sultan Bayezid approaches.
