I think the comp is something like this.
The Senate chooses the four girls and picks one from them, after some time of deciding which will be the best. That one gets to be MA. But the girls see it as a death match--Everyone wants to be MA. If only one's alive, that's the one who gets to be MA. So they end up slaughtering each other until only one remains.
The way the girls died(Pushed off a cliff, suicide, murder) implicate they didn't just round 'em up and toss 'em in a battle arena. The time('yesterday') also shows it happened over a period a time, most likely a week or two between each death.
I admit I studied too much on it, hah. Though the Senate, being as corrupt as it is, probably didn't care whether they killed each other or not. It'd be less work on them.
But I think they wanted four candidates because if one couldn't give birth, they could get another to have a go. Backups and all!
So it's really just the girls themselves doing it. No actual competition besides the exams and stuff to determine their MOTHER factors.
With that out of the way, maybe the two could meet while leaving the testing area(the royal institute probably) after taking exams for their MOTHER factors and getting their results. One or two weeks, or even a month or two, could be given before the announcement of who's in the top four. Because determining four from at least half a million is a hard and long process!
So there's time for them to meet and befriend each other before they all die gruesomely. (⊙‿⊙✿)
