Millay Colony for the Arts

This is where the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived; the place now serves as an artist residency. At the time it was known as Millay Colony for the Arts, now it is simply Millay Arts.

I made this image while there for a few weeks way back in the summer of 2001. I believe I used a four by five inch large format camera with color Polaroid which I scanned (also a long time ago).

Millay Colony

Back in the summer of 2001, I spent some time at the Millay Colony for the Arts, in Austerlitz, New York. It lies on property formerly owned by the famed poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay.

The photographs here represent something I was working on at the time, which would be called “Koans”. I had been taken with meta-photography for some time, and it would continue for another eight years or so.

Interesting: the poet’s middle name comes from the hospital in the West Village of New York. Something to do with her uncle having his life saved there near the time of her birth.
