Today my buddy Kevin asked me to shoot a portrait of him at work. Of course it had to end hilariously with him and his shirt off as he started feeling himself. I haven’t used a flash in my photographs in like 7 years so it took me a few minutes to get reacclimatized. Being that it’s a boring office building I tried to break away from all the digital office stations and tech stuff with cables where he was working and brought him into this construction space. There were four light sources (not including the flash) giving me the hardest time setting an exposure. LED, halogen, tungsten, and sunlight (wide open office space with flashy light fixtures) with different intensities. I couldn’t shut any of them off so I had to over expose everything 2 stops and color correct. Even though I had multiple flashes I decided one hard flash no diffuser would be better suited to capture Kevin’s hard facial features while keeping background spill to a minimum. Framing him was easy. This building was large, tall, and heavily squared off. Easy to find depth and vanishing lines. Kevin loved the photos and remarked that it was the first time he enjoyed being photographed. It has become a joy shooting individuals who likely has never had the opportunity to be in front of a lens. Kevin is a prideful dude and I tried my best to capture it. He didn’t give me a hard time about it!
*guy in blue is his buddy William who insisted on jumping in a photo. Just added this photo because even though it’s framed incorrectly it’s awesome.
