i’m actually very grateful for the panic attack subplot in mindhunter. obviously panic attacks are a terrible thing to experience but i think they represent something deeper for holden.
because it shows that even he has a breaking point. in the first season, he is actually a very scary protagonist. by the end, his personal involvement with the killers starts to blur the line of work and reality.
during interrogations, when he digs into the minds of these criminals...it made me genuinely scared because he can do it extremely well. and normally i would say “he’s just good at his job” but in his real-life relationships, he is actually kind of threatening and i believe that he grabs onto personal feelings in order to pull on the act.
so by giving him panic attacks i’m not only relieved that he has limits, but that he has some sort of humanity. because before this, he’s a workaholic machine. it shows that all throughout the season, his stress was building up. and also it puts his arrogance in check. he hits a peak and then crashes.
and of course, i’m glad they explore mental health in this line of work.

me, the second i see the mindhunter recap: HOLDEN MY SON
Mindhunter season 2 was good! Not quite as good as season 1, but it still had me on the edge of my seat. Bill's situation with Brian and Nancy was heartbreaking. Wendy had great character development. I love Jim Barney.
I will say that I was incredibly disappointed with Holden's anxiety disorder being dropped after two episodes. There was only one mention of it after that. We never saw him even remotely slip back into panic during his most stressful moments. The last two eps especially should've called for more development in the concept of mental illness they were at first trying to portray. It's a widely under-looked subject in TV, and it would've been really amazing to see it in a show centered in the 70s and 80s.
Overall, though, it was a tension-filled season that I binged in less than two days. I definitely will go back and watch it again to form more thoughts.
