Mindy’s Hot Chocolate - Chicago, WI
Overall: B+
I was very excited to get the opportunity to visit Mindy’s Hot Chocolate this past weekend. I went for Sunday brunch. Overall, I think it fell just shy of my (albeit very high) expectations. While there was variation dish-by-dish, I felt it was a strong B+.
Burger - Slagel Farms beef, Carr Valley cheddar, pickle, sesame-poppy seed bun, house made chip
I ordered this burger after having seen many recommendations and I don’t think it quite met them. The burger itself was very good - nice meaty chew and a bold flavor. The bun was very good. I don’t think there was enough cheese and it didn’t come through in either flavor or texture. The burger came with mini bottles of ketchup and mustard, which while cute, ended up being a disappointment. The mustard was extremely strong in flavor and the moderate amount I added completely overwhelmed the flavor of the burger. The biggest disappointment of the meal with the chips, which were simply bad. They felt like they’d been sitting out for several days in humid air and had almost no crunch.
Latke Benedict - potato latke, marinated and grilled Slagel Farms flatiron steak, giardiniera hollandaise, poached farm egg
I thought this was a clever idea and after seeing an order on another table, I was sold. Happily, it tasted as good as it looked. The flavors of all element were excellent. The texture of the egg and latke married perfectly, better than an English muffin could have done. The steak was pretty touch, but I think that much of that toughness can be attributed to the cut.
Medium Hot Chocolate - milk chocolate with a touch of dark chocolate and a hint of caramel, house made marshmallow
Unsurprisingly, this was the star of the show. Almost certainly the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had (I’d have to have it side-by-side with the Frederic Blondeel hot chocolate I had in Brussels to say for sure). Incredibly rich and thick while not having any overpowering feeling like I was literally drinking a molten chocolate bar. It was served moderately hot, which was nice - I didn’t have to wait to avoid burning myself. The marshmallow was incredibly light and fluffy with a really nice flavor. Partially due to the marshmallow itself and partially due to the non-scolding temperature of the hot chocolate, the marshmallow slowly melted rather than almost immediately disintegrating (as I’ve been used to) which was really nice.
Sticky Bun
Good but not knock-your-socks-off. Pretty dense and chewy for a sticky bun, which while being different was nice. Not overly sweet - I think I could have done with a little more sweetness.
Breakfast Cream Puffs - raspberry preserve & creme brûlée cream, cinnamon brown sugar
These were a refreshing and nice take on cream puffs. They weren’t too sweet nor too dense. The raspberry flavor was subtle. My biggest criticism is that they were only about half full. While there was extra creme that could be dipped in to, the as-is ratio of cream filling to pasty was not good.
