hello!! i love the coloring you did for this community gifset https://poppywright.tumblr.com/post/670127928464605184/ill-have-to-make-some-adjustments-to-my-film could you describe how you did it or perhaps direct me to a tutorial? if not, thank u anyway :>
hi there!!! thank you so much, you're so kind!!! i can definitely help you out <3 luckily, i actually still have these psds (very rare for me) so this should be a very quick lil tutorial!!!
this scene has pretty good lighting, so i don't have to fix that up too much before i move on!! here is all of my coloring for this gif:
just three layers!!! i used 2 levels layers just to brighten the scene while keeping the contrast at a natural level so now it looks like this:
and now all that is left is the hue/saturation !!! it's a lil intimidating at first but honestly it's one of my favorite adjustment layers. you can find it right here:
and when you open it, it looks like this!!
then you click on where it says "Master" and you select whatever color you wanna get rid of. for these gifs, i wanna de-saturate every color except red & magenta, so i start with yellow and work my way down. the list. all you have to do for each color is change the saturation to -100.
(side note: i won't always mess with yellow, because sometimes it can really mess up the skintone of the person in the gif you are working on. for this gif, it didn't, but i recommend playing it by ear.)
so i take the saturation down to -100 for yellows, greens, blues, and cyans, add your text, and voila! this is where we end up!
i hope this helps!! i'm always around to answer more questions 💛 i hope you have a lovely day/evening!!
hi!! I really love your gfx's!! weird question; do you think gfx's count as graphic design? or just digital art? what do you call it!! also do you have any tips/programs/resources to get started? thank you, hope you have a good day!!
aksjkdd thank you !!! and tbh i’m not sure how to answer the question; i personally think of gfx as graphic design- communicating a message through visual elements- but some gfx out there are Pure Art (less on “communicating a message” and more on….self expression??? if that’s how you put it???) depending on how you do it, so i guess it can be digital art as well!

be patient and don’t rush; gfx takes time to complete!
don’t compare yourself to others! other ppl might have years of experience behind them
+ ppl learn things at different speeds, so an editor w 1 yr of experience might be better than you, w 2 yrs of experience, but it’s just bc they’re a fast learner
that being said, always explore! tutorials are good but you won’t improve if you stick by the handbook
be resourceful! collect as much psds + textures + fonts as you can, you might use them later
take notes of trends! ik i said to explore, but trends are a great way to explore different styles of editing + developing your own style
+ collect inspo! study them and figure out how the editor did that
that being said, do not plagiarize. there’s a difference between “taking inspo” and outright coping someone else’s hrs of work. copying is just lazy work + speaks volumes abt your (lack of) skills
talk to gfx makers- drop a compliment, ask them abt their gfx, inspo, process…you’ll learn Loads from them
adflkj it got rlly long and i have to study now, but i hope this was helpful! enjoy~
I am the anon of the double color gifs sorry to bother you again. If it's not a problem i would love that tutorial 🙈 when you have time oc no rush ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ so much love
hey anon!!!! you’re not bothering me at all, don’t worry!!!! i’m going to put the entire tutorial in this ask!!!! i am going to use a simple typography clip that i recently giffed for a set that is sitting in my drafts.
how to turn this
into this
program: photoshop (i am personally using cc 2017)
difficulty: medium (basic photoshop knowledge required)
so first things first, you’ve gotta load up your frames into photoshop! screencaps, video import, however you normally do it should work fine (i personally import my videos). so you load up the frames you’re using, crop, and resize as normal.
now, the background of this clip is has a few stripes that i want out of the way, but it’s fairly solid, which is the ideal for a gif like this. however, it’s still kinda grainy and ugly back there, so i am going to put a layer over everything and color in all around the typography with the brush tool so the background is solid (in the first screenshot, i’ve circled the paintbrush tool and the new layer tool for reference).
now, i prefer to work in timeline, so i’m gonna convert to a smart object and sharpen! this isn’t strictly necessary if you don’t like to gif this way, you can do the coloring for this gif how you normally would, with your coloring layers over your frames.
(just for reference, because i was giffing for over half a year before i figured out where selective color is even located, in this screenshot here are the buttons for contrast & brightness and selective color, the two tools i use in this tutorial).
so now i’m gonna start coloring! for a gif like this, i’m going to up my contrast to +100, use selective color to up the black to +100, add a black and white layer, and then add another layer of contrast at +100 and selective color with black at +100.
so now my coloring layers look like this:
and my gif looks like this:
now i’m going to stick my coloring layers in a folder and add a new selective color layer above them. in this layer, i am going to put both my whites and my neutrals at -100 black.
and i am going to turn down the black coloring until i get to a shade of gray that i like (in this case, it seems to be about -89).
now my gif looks like this!
now, you can play around with the cyan, magenta, and yellow levels in this layer to make the gif any shade of the rainbow you like! in the set i giffed this scene for, i used a lot of pastel blues, so i tinkered around with my selective coloring levels till they looked something like this.
and voila! now my gif looks like this, which is just how i wanted it!
bonus content! say you have a clip where the typography is dark and the background is light, but you want white typography and a colorful background.
in a situation like this, what you want to do is make the background as white as possible, and the text as black as possible, and then add an adjustment level to invert!
now your gif looks like this, and you can start selective coloring like i showed you above!
and there you go! instead of having this,
you have this!
i’m not super great at tutorials, as a teacher i’ve always found more success in hands-on teaching, but i really hope this helped!!!! if you have any questions, feel free to let me know! i hope you’re doing well and staying safe!!! ♡♡
your sunflower changkyun gfx is gorgeous!! could you do a tutorial on how to make the second panel (if you don't mind) ?
sdflkj sorry for the late reply!! school got busy as Hecc again and i didn’t even have time to breathe :///
anyway i’ve never done a tutorial before & i hope this isn’t confusing! this became rlly long bc i don’t know how to explain things well ;; so here goes: how to make this
(warning: pretty picture heavy bc idk how to explain things; may differ from original post bc i tried to recreate it) (also i may have jumped between steps a few times oops)
let’s start!
open a new document & choose a file size (here, it’s 500*500)
open a new layer, then select a picture and start cropping using the pen (P) tool, for exact lines, and lasso (L) tool for wavy lines
i used this picture
and cropped out the part i wanted
i like to crop out the background around it, not the subject, as it’s easier to go back if you make a mistake
also, i create a new layer beneath the image and fill it w a contrasting colour so that i can see if i cropped it cleanly, like below
after that, open another new layer, choose a different background colour and fill it in. it becomes the background.
open a 3rd layer. press (M) to open the selection tool, right click to open the options, & draw a circle.
fill in that circle with any colour.
i used the eyedropper tool (capital i) to select one of the skin tones
to make the sunflower petals go out of the circle
duplicate the cropped picture of changkyun twice.
duplicate the circle layer. on circle layer #2, use the square selection tool to select an area below the sunflower petals, like so
and then, ensuring you’re still on the circle layer, press backspace to delete it.
click on cropped picture layer #2, and, with the selection still on, press backspace to get this.
now click on circle layer #1. press quick selection tool (W) again and highlight the circle area.
click on cropped picture layer #1. with the selection still on, right click and press select inverse, then backspace to delete the outside area.
merge the cropped picture layers together, and the circle layers together. you’ll get this.
background & shadow effect
i googled “sunflower png” to get these images (i put them in one canvas here, but they’re different pngs)
for the background sunflower (bottom one), duplicate it to two layers.
press ctrl+T for transformation tool. on one of the layers, right click and press flip horizontal.
arrange the sunflowers & resize them anyway you want, then merge the layers together.
to make the grey effect, use quick selection tool (W) and highlight the sunflowers png.
then, click on the fourth button from the right, then click hue and saturation.
these were the settings i used.
now, for the shadow effects! first, i placed my sunflowers where i wanted them to be and resized them.
then, i double clicked the one of the sunflower layers to open this.
check the drop shadow box. these were the settings i used.
i repeated the same for the other sunflower layer.
oomf and the sunflowers inside the circle!!!
using the first png, i placed it in the circle and cropped it using the selection tool.
i placed the layer behind the picture, but in front of the circle so it liooks like this.
colouring
quick tip: the quick selection tool (W) is your friend!!!
before you do anything, always click the correct layer you want to highlight. also, highlight the entire canvas with the selection tool to make sure you don’t miss a spot.
click on the fourth button from the right again, and play around! for this image, i wanted to bring more colour into his skin, so i used the following settings.
levels, before and after: to control the whites, neutrals and darks.
before levels
with levels
settings
not sure how to explain this but dragging around the arrows on the top part will change the colour, and dragging around the arrows on the bottom will change the range? of colour? if you play around w levels, you’ll understand what i mean.
selective colour: actually brings the colour in. also takes a lot of experimenting to do. for example, if you click the red tab and move the arrows of the cyan to the right, you’ll increase in cyan, but if you move to the left, you’ll increase in red. quick explanation of my settings down below:
reds: important for skin colour; gives him the blushy warmth.
yellows: important for skin too; gives him the golden glow.
whites: decreases the white shades too; gives him better contrast. when increasing the colour, like magenta, it makes white spaces turn pinkish, etc. applies to neutrals and blacks too.
neutrals: same as whites.
blacks: to make shadows lighter and give it slight colour.
for comparison, here is him with only levels
with selective colour
notice how he has colour now!!
text
type whatever you want in the text box. make sure it fits inside the circle.
place the text between the picture and the circle.
final (and original) product:
done!!!
if you have any more questions, feel free to drop me an ask!
