i find it so disappointing when people fall for low quality slop just because it's based on something they like and don't have the critical thinking skills to understand WHY it's slop: a rant about one of my friends, and the Minecraft movie.
i have this friend. we'll call her S. S went to see the Minecraft movie when it came out, and has not stopped referencing it and trying to convince me it's funny and worth watching because 'minecraft yaoi'. I've tried to explain to her why I refuse to watch it and think it's disgraceful, but she just doesn't understand. I don't want to be elitist, but it makes me wonder if she ever had care for the game itself. at all.
The game is a beautiful experience about building and creating and expressing yourself. finding the little tidbits of the possible history of the world. finding treasure. looking that pink sheep in its eyes full of wonder and basking in this rare moment. it's about the universe actively encouraging you to explore and create because it loves you. it's about carving something out of nothing and looking at your work and being proud. it's about connecting with others and creating masterpieces together.
But S doesn't understand that. She thinks the jokes and nonsensical plot and low grade humor are peak and won't pay any attention to anyone making good argument. This has made me actively avoid talking to her, as she doesn't see the point. She can't look at the art and say "I get it". she's as old as me, but refuses to engage in any thinking about why the Minecraft movie was a slap in the face to the community.
The Minecraft movie feels like it was made for a quick buck and there was no heart behind it. A critical thing about the game is that you need to have creativity. You need to have that drive to make something. But the movie just made another Jumanji ripoff. It just made another shitty isekai that will never hold any importance to anyone in the future. But it made a lot of money apparently, and that's what matters, right?
And S doesn't seem to realize that if she continues to consume this slop with cheap jokes and catchy fifteen-second songs and ugly soulless visuals without criticism that we'll never get anything different.
I always dread it when she brings up Minecraft, because she doesn't understand why the movie was so offensive to the community.
I just want to curl up and cry because minecraft is so important to me. It was the building blocks of who I am today. it defined me as I grew up playing it. But S doesn't understand that the majority of people in the Minecraft fandom also feel like this. She doesn't understand why the movie's existence hurts us.
and she's just okay with that.
