Josh in Salford #5 (Bit Much, 9.10.19)
Well, it’s that time again. Time for another of my infamous ramblings or write-ups about seeing one of our favourite trio!
Last night (October 9th 2019), I went to see Josh at the The Lowry in Salford as part of his latest tour, Bit Much.
As expected, he was amazing as ever and it felt a bit weird seeing him in the big room (Lyric Theatre) again as he was in the smaller one only last year for a one-off show for Quickly Kevin, his 90s football podcast.
This show was also a wonderful comeback to standup for him. A lot has changed for our dear Josh since What Do I Do Now... from 2015/2016. Gone are the days (for now) of him talking about growing up in Devon and the shocker - not a single mention of his beloved Pret A Manger!
Josh tackled silly subjects such as his girlfriend signing up to a weekly vegetable delivery service, his love of pesto, advent calendars without chocolate (just the pictures) and baby monitors - he’s all grown up!
He also mentioned his dislike of early flights for holidays and stag dos, hiding in his hotel room until the evening party of a wedding by getting drunk watching Football Focus and his local park closing at “dusk”.
Before Josh came onstage, his support was the always wonderful Ivo Graham who was around for most of Josh’s last tour. Shame a stupid heckler who was sat a few rows down from us at the very top shelf of the venue (we got our tickets last minute) with an annoying laugh wouldn’t shut up, but thankfully, he did when Josh was onstage.
Salford, well, Manchester is always a special show for Josh as when he was wrapping the show up, he talked briefly about how he’s played every room in the venue, his uni days and getting to see Harry Hill and Derren Brown in the same venue. The show last night was sold out, despite a few no-showers.
Afterwards, I had another quick little catchup with him and yes, I had Mini Josh with me as ever! He’s always so pleased to see him (and me!!).
So, um... I also have a confession to make. I knew about some BIG news of Josh’s that’s happened recently (Adam told me in Warrington in August) , he recently got married in the last fortnight! I, of course, congratulated him and told him I already knew from Adam telling me and we had a good giggle about it.
We then said our goodbyes, along with one of the best cuddles ever(!!) and started wondering what shows we’d see each other at next year. Trust me, there’ll be a few! (Chester, probably. Liverpool, yes!!)
If Josh’s coming near you, this year or next, I encourage you to go. This show seemed like such a special one for him and while he’s all grown-up now, he’ll always be the same Josh who I saw on his very first Live at the Apollo 8 years ago talking about 2p pushing machines in arcades and myxomatosis!
While this year has been a tough one for me personally, and we might’ve broken tradition by not being in the first 10 rows, getting to see Josh really did put a smile back on my face. There’s just something so special about getting to see someone who’ve supported and looked up to for so long, that feeling is just... indescribable. I’ve only ever felt that with Josh, Adam, Alex and another wonderful “comedian”/dear friend, Steve McNeil (from Go 8 Bit, Josh was in the early live shows and series 3!).
Next year can’t come soon enough to see my favourite curly head yet again. ❤️
Idina Menzel & Tyler McGee (u/s Josh) “Here I Go”
So there’s a kid on my son’s soccer team and he looks JUST LIKE Josh Brolin’s character Brand from The Goonies, like the dude has the bandana and everything so I’ve now taken to referring to him as “Young Josh” and screaming out quotes from the movie whenever he runs past me “Goonies never say die!!” “DO THE TRUFFLE SHUFFLE!!!” and long story short, my kid doesn’t want me at his games any more :)
Mini Josh reunited with… actual Josh! (3.05.18)
Well, this happened again tonight!!
Mini Josh was reunited with actual Josh after his brilliant Quickly Kevin gig in Salford. Definitely worth the year and a half wait to see him again!
It was adorable to see him having a non-stop fanboy moment over something he’s so passionate about (90s football!) and a nice change from what we’re used to seeing and hearing him do.
He was his usual hilarious self (along with his co-hosts Chris & Michael) and the show included loads of 90s football clips, a special guest (David May) and there was plenty of audience banter with people who’d definitely come dressed for the occasion!
If you haven’t heard the podcast yet, I highly recommend it!!
After the show, it really was a stroke of luck getting to speak to Josh again. We had a very brief catchup (he still gives the BEST cuddles!), gave him some football stickers I found ages ago while tidying up that he’ll definitely appreciate (along with a letter) and as for another tour… NEXT AUTUMN!
Thank you once again Josh for another brilliant evening. While I won’t go into detail with why this time really meant to so much to me, every time I’ve seen him has been my absolute favourite and once he’s finished writing his next tour, it’ll definitely have been worth the wait! See you next year!! Xxxx
Mini Josh!!
For anyone wondering how I made my Mini Josh (who's face lit up when he saw him recently), here's a post with some pictures and info while I was making him.
I don't think it's that big of a secret that I'm obsessed with those Pop Vinyl figures. Sherlock, Orphan Black, Borderlands, Arrested Development, MCR... Funko have made just about everyone!
If you don't know who Josh Widdicombe is, he's my favourite comedian and one of the loveliest people ever. I highly recommend watching The Last Leg, his sitcom Josh and various British comedy panel shows - he's been on them all!
So, I had an idea one day that I wanted a mini Josh to keep Sherlock and co company. I looked on Amazon and saw they did blank figures. I'd drawn up a few ideas of what I wanted him to look like. I was originally going to make him look like a scene from the series two finale of his sitcom, but it was a nightmare getting the claws on his feet (dinosaur slippers) to stay on. Once I'd sorted paints and clays out, Mini Josh took me about a month to make.
Now bear in mind that this was my first time doing anything like this, I don't think he turned out that bad! I did struggle with his hair a bit. I thought I should've based his hair off Sherlock at first, but I found one of my Will Graham's and his hair was the closest to Josh's (it would've killed me to ruin a Sherlock!). I used Will's hair as a reference for Josh, by moulding/shaping the clay on his head, but not letting it dry, then removing the pieces and placing them on what would eventually become Josh's head. Mini Josh was starting to look okay! He spent a lot of his creation time on a saucer on our kitchen windowsill (see above pictures).
After his hair was sorted, painting was a bit harder and I had to finally decide how I wanted his outfit/body to look like. I went with a blue jumper he wears a lot, his dark blue/grey jeans and his white Converse. He was starting to look a lot like Josh once his golden curls were painted! I did screw up painting his left eye a little bit, but you can't really notice.
Once he was completed (November 21st), it was only two days before I was seeing the legend himself again and I thought it would've been lovely to at least show him the finished result! Josh's face lit up when he saw him and said he was "amazing." He happily approved when I asked if it was okay that he lives with my ever-growing army of Sherlock's! (Josh is a Sherlock fan too!) Before I said goodbye to Josh once again *sobs*, I asked him if I could take a picture of him with his mini self. I tweeted him the picture and tagged his Instagram too. I'm sure he'll have seen it and smiled about it.
I'm pleased with his final result and he doesn't look so bad for a first attempt. He's currently living next to Sherlock and John, while they guard my Xbox. Mini Josh also has a BFF in mini Kermit (who represents Adam.. any ideas for something Alex related?) too!
I have been asked if I'll do Adam and Alex to keep him company. I'm tempted to now! Who knows... Maybe I'll take Mini Josh with me to Pret or anywhere Josh related in the future!
After a month of making him, mini Josh finally got to meet the legend himself!! Josh loved his mini self and approved that he’ll live happily next to my army of Sherlocks.
Thank you Josh for being lovely as always on and off stage! Come back very soon okay?!
