Minimal Design Trend invading the world ?
One of the new trends in User Interface digital design, especially interface design, is the return of simple, flat and typographical design, which is also called as minimal Design......
In the past 2 to 3 years we saw many big companies going minimal ..... shedding off their artistic image
Microsoft in spite of their failure product zone continued to use more minimal design in their MOBILE OS and recent windows8
and on the other hand their Rival apple shed their rich retina loving textures of leather and steel and keep on their simple sleek design...
And Late Steve Job being a follower of Zen which emphasis on simplicity .... now its all strictly working out for the company ..and not to forget that steve one of the first persons to have single buttoned mouse
Google is no such exception
They have some guideline which they hardly try to skip ..
Douglas Bowman, left the Google at the end of March, he wrote a very touching blog post about his reasons for quitting. According to this post the company was relying more user data .. that it would not even risk a small design change or a new methodology until it was experimented..It seems his team was not able to decide between two blues so around 41 shades of blue was tested to find out which performed better ...
We saw the Masable redesign at the end of 2012
and also the next web feed minimal approach
Have you ever wondered why these big giants or the proven tycoon go minimal
Almost 30% to 40 % startups have gone minimal in 2011 to 2012 ....
Its not just because it's refreshing or people got bored of artistic, grungy and light drop shadow websites... it has more logical answer
And Since there was more awareness of Usability and its huge success, wesbite entrepreneur started believing on reasonable solution rather that artistic answers..
Usability is Not Optional
There’s no good reason to choose design over usability, they will work together perfectly if executed properly.
Research Results...
Paul Bolls a associate professor of strategic communication at the school found out few design oriented results about brain friendly designs
The brain can only process so much information at a time
Too much information can overload it and cancel out understanding and retention. Consuming news and advertising involves receiving information, adding previously held knowledge for context and then storage of the new information.
Bolls said that these steps need to be kept in balance.
"If a reader has to work too hard to find the stories they are looking for on a news site, it can defeat their brain's ability to add context and store the new information for the future," he said. "Keeping it simple is key."
So in order to keep the users brain understand things .. its better to keep it simple a possible
As you can see the above design berthing space is better in this trend.
Another Important reason is increase in the types of devices for viewing web.We have come to a stage where we can develop multi platform website, and gained rave response.A single website for multifaceted users can be achieved in minimal design very easily .. As scalability is not a though part in minimal and Scalable means its really good for responsive design and we are in right balance.
Relying on the fact mobile websites should look similar to the desktop version, but mobile versions should be simpler than a desktop look
The balance between content and pictures must be appropriate to the platforms that each design is meant for..
There are many ways to align objects on a page but with a clean, simple, minimal design, if something is even a pixel or two off it will be much easier to spot.
The fundamentals are just that, fundamental. All your design principals become much more important to understand and implement when clutter and unneeded items are removed, pushing your message to the forefront.
You could see why rage comics have invaded the INTERNET meme for such a long time.. its all because of the simplicity..
What are the rules the MINIMAL rely on
Less Is More
Limit Needless Things
Omit Needless Things
Subtract Until It Breaks
Color Minimally
White Space Is Vital
Simple tasks like putting the focus only on the essential elements of your website, getting rid of the unnecessary, reducing the number of pages your site has, getting more content above the fold, and limiting the number of colors you use. You can always fine-tune and improve your simple design, but the important thing here is to get started.
Conclusion
So when big guns follow the simplicity route how do they get spotted.. its all because of the grungy non user friendly website.. as far as web is concerned as a website designers we should be open to all kind of work according to clients retirements.. there is no point in taking User friendliness for a dashing celebration or a success website...but when the client is wants a traffic flooded website its the minimal design choice for us
