A Healthy Mind Parallel To A Healthy Body
For Spinoza, the mind is not a separate ghost inside the body. The mind is the idea of the body. In other words, your thoughts, feelings, memories, and sense of self are parallel expressions of your living organism. As the body changes, the mind changes. As the body weakens, the mind weakens. If the body dies, then the ordinary personal self tied to that body also disappears.
But Spinoza also says that the human mind can participate in something more universal than the individual organism. He calls this “God,” though for him God is not a personal being sitting outside the universe. God means the totality of existence itself, the whole structure of reality and nature. Everything that exists is an expression of this single infinite substance.
