Gen Con 2016 - Minion 446 reporting in!
This was my first chance to see Steve since I became a member of the Ascended Minion Project. I had already had my biggies signed at a local prerelease in early 2012 (Liliana) and GP Chicago 2014 (Deathrite Shamans), so my goals for this weekend was to get the 2015 Judge playmat I had traded for signed, purchase a Slave of Bolas playmat, get my playset of Glistener Elf (Infect is the only Modern deck I have) signed, and upgrade the sideways Damia I had won in Game Show 15 to a shadow signature. As you can see in the photos, I accomplished those things and more!
Since I was Judging Magic events during the evening each day of the Con, I had to be sure to visit early. It also kind of sucked that Steve’s Booth, as well as the rest of the Artist Alley, was almost as far as possible across the convention center from the Magic game play area. That meant I did a lot of “I’m trying to get somewhere, why are people walking so slow?” walking.
I only had to wait in line the first day; but that is because every other day the line was closed when I was there. Steve was doing many alters! I didn’t take any photos while I was there (I should have, but it never even crossed my mind), but the tables were overloaded with playmats. A new one even debuted there, and it was of Glistener Elf, so I actually had to decided between getting the art I liked more or the art that was more in sync with a deck I played.
Benefits of being a Minion: Steve didn’t charge me at all for my signatures, and then handed me a full set of the tokens. So, if you are just a lurker, you really should be signing up! I got one of the new Lineshambler cards; hopefully Steve will do more events in the Mid-West so I can upgrade it! I was also sure to stop by each day for the complete set of binder candy. I also have a nice new photo with Chandra Ablaze as the background to use as my avatar for the Judge Apps site, the website where you apply to work big events.
Gen Con was exhausting, mostly because I didn’t get off shift until 3 A.M., but it was really cool getting to see Steve and Kat and feel a bit like an insider.
